They know advertising has little effect on product sales and the stock price so it's used to push ESG and DEI narratives instead. Additionally, global finance uses it as a humiliation ritual. There is a reason these ads only are shown in the West.
if advertising had no affect on sales, no one would spend a penny on advertising.
Then you don't know anything about Marketing. As an outsider who took over Marketing, I can assure you there is much marketing spend that has little to no actual ROI. When I took over this function, my immediate push was to have the team show me how, where, why, and when we spent Marketing dollars and to show me the ROI of each channel.
Lo and behold, I discovered entire channels of Marketing spend that had not produced a single lead...in years. I immediately killed that spend. When I asked the team why they continued to spend money on channels that produced nothing? "That's just what you do. That's how Marketing works."
After delving further into this and attending Marketing industry events, I then discovered that most companies have no ability to tie revenue generation back to Marketing spend. It's still considered somewhat of a holy grail to understand and make this connection for most companies.
If you look at a lot of the digital marketing metrics they are meaningless bull**** - site visits, click throughs...basically just interactions with your external channels with a lot of it not translating to revenue. We had a dashboard with all of these metrics that basically just told me how often someone touches or gets touched by us but ROI couldn't be measured.
Like many things, money gets spent on Marketing by Marketing people because it's make work for their industry and departments. It keeps them employed.
