Geoffrey Holt, who worked as a social studies teacher and driver's ed instructor before retiring to work as a caretaker in the trailer park where he lived, left a $4.8 million fortune to the town of Hinsdale, New Hampshire.

What is interesting is Holt worked as a production manager at grain mill in nearby Brattleboro, Vermont before it closed. Brattleboro was home to another secret millionaire, Ronald Read. Read made national news after he left $1.2 million to the local library and $4.8 million to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital after he died in 2014.

Both Holt and Read enjoyed investing as one of their hobbies. I'm just curious if they knew each other or knew of each other, since they both took the same approach to investing.

I'm sure the Dems are crafting a 'secret wealth windfall tax' as we speak to ensure the secretly wealthy pay their 'fair share' even after they're dead.

I wonder how fast the public school system will squander and waste it on ineffective dogmatic initiatives that achieve little to improve education results?

Yeah, that 4.8mil would fund one 3rd grade playground at CSISD. Then we'd have to approve a new bond for the mulch.

If there's anywhere that a fortune should be left, it's not in the hands of the government.

Might as well given the 4.8 million to toddlers.

They'll spend 6.9 million for a monument in his honor.

He probably would have given it to impoverished human beings to better their lives. I doubt he would have donated it to the Roman Empire.

Damn straight.

Ever notice how the further removed the money spenders are from the money earners, the less efficient the use of that money?

I recall also that 3,000 years ago Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes that he was troubled about accumulating a vast amount of wealth and then not knowing whether whomever he left it to 'would be a fool or not'.

In the case of the New Hampshire man I can answer Solomon's question -- yes, they will be fools.

It's a very small town so perhaps he knew most of the people living there and wanted to leave something to them.

Regardless, it was his money to do with as he saw fit.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

And he distributed it in the most inefficient manner known to man.

I agree it's a small town. So why not have it go as an endowment for college scholarships for students, build a sports complex, maintain hiking trails, etc. simply turning over $4.8 million to bureaucrats seems like the dumbest idea of all. Hell if nothing else, send all 3,905 residents a Christmas check for $1200.

I did read it, but I took brief instructions to be that it was at the discretion of the town what to use it for. It seems like someone else thought of that for him.

They will do something stupid with it, like build a wing on the high school for gender studies or gender dysphoria acceptance
