CNN 10 in Schools

How long do you want to ignore this user?
My 5th grade daughter told me they watch CNN 10 every day in school. I had never heard of this so watched a few episodes. It's a 10 minute news program made for kids (you can go watch it online for free if you like). I'm going to watch some more episodes before I draw a final conclusion but it seems every episode has pretty liberal undertones without directly advocating for liberal causes. The 2 main themes I've noticed are that they seem to (1) demonize fossil fuels / promote climate change / green agenda and (2) sympathize with the Palestinians.

I expressed my concerns about this content not being right for 10 year olds and her teacher offered to let her opt out of watching but that doesn't seem like the right solution so I'm scratching my head at next steps. Am I wrong to think this type of crap should not be in our schools, particularly at such a young age?

For reference: I live in a pretty deep red district in Texas.

Garbage. Indoctrination.

If you can afford it, get your kids out of public schools.

If they showed Prager U I bet you wouldn't be clutching your pearls about "indoctrination."

But you would. Neither should be shown.

I would have zero problem with a liberal parent requesting that not be shown.

This kind of crap is not going away. It's a great opportunity to teach your kids about critical thinking and not just consuming all the spoon fed media. Go through a couple of episodes with them and ask them to point out the leading wording or why they would choose those stories over others that they didn't show.

They are going to be living in this world, too. Make sure they know how to be in it without becoming it.

Does Prager U get busted regularly for lying? Sounds like a much better option, teaching news centered around proven economic theory for 10 minutes to kids.

CNN 10 was the last straw for us a few years ago. We departed Round Rock ISD are now in private school. You should be too.
oh no

it's socialist indoctrination. every public school kid watches it every day for a few years.

they learn about how wonderful and benevolent government always is- the good guys are here to help of course - that being a good little obedient servant is virtuous

They shouldn't be playing anything, but if they must, ask them to split time with Prager U so they can see both sides.

You can try and get them to use some PragerU videos to counterbalance but that's tough, still it's the best straight up information source against that propaganda.

The best solution is to make sure you educated your daughter on a lot of that stuff yourself. Ask about what she learned in school. Be patient and don't get angry. Just ask questions you already know like "Huh. Did they talk about how much oil and gas has made life better for poor people? Do they ever mention how many products come from oil?"

I always would tell my boys about my 7th Grade Science book. In it is stated as facts:
We were on the verge of a coming Ice Age
The US would be completely out of oil by 1990 and the world would be out of oil by 2000
The Ozone layer was being destroyed.
Acid Rain was also going to kill us.

I also ask if they talk about how most of the pollution and burning of carbon comes from China and India and other Asian countries that have almost no environmental regulations they enforce. They just dump stuff in rivers and let it flow in the ocean but we don't let that happen here.

As for Israel and Palestine that's tougher and depends on how much history she can stand. Trying to explain history and geopolitics to a young kid depends a lot on the kid. Finding some of the right movies can help but it depends on them. Mainly just talking to her about stuff like what "From the River to the Sea" means that Israel has been trying to find a peaceful solution with the Arabs and let them have their own country but the Palestinians will only accept killing all the Jews and taking all the land. If you are religious you can talk about Jerusalem and the Bible and why it is important to the 3 Major Religions.

It's tough but the key is engagement and patience. You will also find that being a kid they will start to ask questions in class or talk about it with friends and it will work against the credibility of what they are watching. Once the distrust in the source starts it makes kids question everything. Essentially use the reverse of what the Left is trying to do against them.

Hope that helps.

Stuff like this has been around forever. I grew up when they were installing the Channel One TV's in all the classrooms. That was where Anderson Cooper got his start. I have no idea how/if the show was slanted. It was junior high. You were more concerned about the pretty girl next to you that had changed from a tomboy over the summer. Different times. I do recognize that kids think about different things these days though.

If CNN 10 is worse than Round Rock ISD in terms of being liberal...we have a major problem!!!

Throw in keeping religion in any way out of school and you've got the trio of neutrality.

I was in jr high and high school with Channel One.

Anderson Cooper, Lisa Lang, a few other now mostly liberal news people came out of that which was I believe a CNN production.

Most memorable thing about that time, was the "who's that lady, who's that lady commercial" and some of the shampoo commercials probably not great for high school boys.

In the end, you have to reinforce what's important.

I had to show Channel One every morning at my first school.

Never really impressed with it.

But it put a TV in the classroom where I could show movies.
We also spent the whole day of 9/11 switching between CNN and ABC.

Middle school. My youngest brought this to my attention a few years ago. Not sure if they still use it. Pissed me off at the time. Used it as an opportunity to show her how different news providers have agendas and that digging deeper to source material and becoming educated on the subject to reach your own conclusions was the answer.

I know that they watch it in 7th grade at WMS. Not in 5th at Pecan Trail. Don't know if it is teacher specific or not. I have not been throwing a fit about it, but we do have discussions about it at home

Why do you need to watch more? What you listed is absolute nonsense. Educate your kids on current events. If you don't, then you are screwed.

Your child's government assigned teachers are making sure they are conditioned to watch and trust government run media.

The only solution is private school/school choice.

Don't let them have your children. It's a huge risk you are taking and you may regret it for the rest of your life.

There is an active agenda to separate children from their parents and its real and its happening. Get them out of the system. Find a way.

I suggest talking with your kids each day to see what was broadcast. Then, give them your view on those topics.
They will learn not to blindly trust what is broadcast.

Fight the good fight!

They'd never show Prager U in classrooms. They're not supposed to teach them the truth. They're supposed to indoctrinate.

You can contact Texas Scorecard and see if they are willing to raise awareness.
There are much worse things happening elsewhere in Texas, but they might be able to influence a conservative district.

My daughter had it when she entered 6th grade as well. I was not happy about it, but there's not much you can do about it without putting a target on your family. Most of the teachers don't see anything wrong with CNN and think it really is news.

As others have stated, I try to have conversations with her about these issues.

1. That's not happening
2. Ok, it's happening but it's a small fringe group of people
3. Ok, it's happening broadly but it doesn't affect you or your kid so why do you care
4. Ok, it's happening but it's a good thing

My brother in christ, Prager U is indoctrination.

Let's be honest here. What you're really saying is that grooming is OK as long as the school is grooming them to think the way you do.
