My 5th grade daughter told me they watch CNN 10 every day in school. I had never heard of this so watched a few episodes. It's a 10 minute news program made for kids (you can go watch it online for free if you like). I'm going to watch some more episodes before I draw a final conclusion but it seems every episode has pretty liberal undertones without directly advocating for liberal causes. The 2 main themes I've noticed are that they seem to (1) demonize fossil fuels / promote climate change / green agenda and (2) sympathize with the Palestinians.

I expressed my concerns about this content not being right for 10 year olds and her teacher offered to let her opt out of watching but that doesn't seem like the right solution so I'm scratching my head at next steps. Am I wrong to think this type of crap should not be in our schools, particularly at such a young age?

For reference: I live in a pretty deep red district in Texas.
I'm a high school social studies teacher, and a conservative. I use CNN 10 occasionally, usually to fill the last few minutes of a class if we finish a bit early. I was skeptical of using anything from CNN at first, but I've used it for years, and I find that it almost always does a pretty good job of not being political. If they address a political topic, they usually give a fairly objective summary of what both sides are claiming and leave it at that. I was pleasantly surprised.

That said, they do have features about environmental issues. But, I don't recall seeing a climate doom and gloom agenda as much as just pointing out people who are doing innovative things...they had a report this week on new farming techniques that might better utilize the land/resources. Stuff like that.

I was a little disappointed in their coverage of Israel/Gaza, as they were really trying to straddle the fence. In their defense, it is a difficult subject for students (particularly young students).

I wouldn't show this to fifth graders, but mostly because I think it would be over most of their heads. I showed it to seventh graders at one point, and it was hit or miss with them. For high schoolers, it's on level and I occasionally get a good question or two as a result.

Among the things you have to worry about with kids in public schools these days, this is relatively harmless. I reserve the right to change my mind in the future if things change, but over a decade or so of using this, I'm not concerned.

Good idea. I wish my 16 year old would have said this instead of, "That's bullsh*t. It didn't happen like that." Quick trip to the principle's office on that one.

I was 7 years old when Jimmy Carter beat Gerald Ford to win the Presidency. Even then, I knew Democrats were crap. I was very upset when my elementary school made us watch that POS President get inaugurated on TV during school hours.

7 years old and I knew. I was one happy 11 year old when Reagan won in 1980.

These days, I don't even know if 7 year olds even have a clue.
