An Alaska Airlines Embraer E175 was forced to divert from its flight path, as a person sitting in the flight deck jump seat attempted to shut down the aircraft's engines. The flight, operated by Horizon Air, safely diverted to Portland International Airport (PDX) on October 22, 2023.

FedEx Flight 705
Was going to mention that. None of the flight crew has even flown again because of their injuries. The attempted hijacker is serving life in club fed.

PORTLAND, Ore. A flight from Everett to San Francisco was diverted to Portland Sunday night due to a "credible security threat" involving an off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot.

Alaska Airlines said in a statement to KOMO News Monday morning the incident happened on Alaska Airlines Flight 2059, which was operated by Horizon Air. The airline said the crew members on the flight "reported a credible security threat related to an authorized occupant in the flight deck jump seat."

The flight from Seattle Paine Field International Airport in Everett to San Francisco was diverted to Portland International Airport where it landed safely. Alaska Air said in a statement the crew "secured the aircraft without incident." ABC News reported the suspect was an off-duty pilot.

According to booking information from the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, 44-year-old man was taken into custody and booked into jail just after 4 a.m. Monday. The arrest was made by the Port of Portland Police Department, which serves as law enforcement for Portland International Airport.

The man is facing 83 charges of attempted murder, a charge of endangering an aircraft and several other charges of reckless endangerment.

The Port of Portland told KATU KOMO's sister station in Portland the case had been assigned to the FBI.

Wasn't it an Alaska Air maintenance worker or ramp agent that stole a plane a couple years ago and flew a couple loopty-loops and other crazy acrobatics before just lawn darting the thing?

Ahh.

I was a little confused. I didn't see how shutting the engines down would be a problem at altitude. Just relight and go.

But if you dumped foam or whatever they do for fire suppression, that might make a relight hard or impossible.

In before a certain airline pilot tells us it is not in the handbook / instruction manual for a jumpseat rider to attack the pilots.

BTW - The FedEx story is one for the ages. The "Air Disasters" episode on it is absolute crazy. Dude was determine, fortunately the other guys were more committed.

This **** is crazy but has to be dealt with as a one off. Only change may be to psych evals. But the German guy showed that is not all that great due to privacy laws.

Horizon Air operates for Alaska Airlines.
The big guys use these smaller companies as their regional carriers to increase their slot times at major airports

Makes sense, I'm no expert on this stuff, I just remember reading the story a few months back for some reason, and remembered it being "Horizon Air."

If they can pause reviewing the maga hat wearers, maybe they should deep screen all the DEI hires the last few years.

The guy was 44, so not likely to be a diversity hire. Especially being male and named Joseph David Emerson.

My guess is that he had some life crisis, like divorce or bankruptcy or multiple problems.

What I don't get is why this pilot would do this on a jump seat flight. If he is suicidal, it would have been easier to do it when he was in the pilot seat. Thank God he failed.

Did anybody check to see if that F'er was real or not? Crazy airplane lady could have called him out before he ever breeched the cockpit...

So being a DEI hire would be a likely reason for this person to go nutso? No one is filtering 'MAGA hat wearers'....unless they actually worn one in the interview and started shouting 'election fraud' out of the blue. Airlines are desperate for pilots. If anything they need to do not just mental health screens on new hires, but current ones as well (every now an then).

A pilot did this on Germanwings Flight 9525. Waited for the captain to go to the bathroom and locked the cockpit door. Crashed into the side of a mountain. 150 people died.

Exactly which thankfully he didn't think to do something similar. It is all but impossible to stop a pilot that is suicidal from taking a plane down if they plan it at all. Fortunately, it is very rare.

Hated the airline?

Hated passengers?

His survivors get a big payout if he dies on a plane, but not if he shoots himself in the head?
