Something is absolutely wrecking our endocrine systems and overall health in this country.

Is this the next fear porn, that microplastics are responsible for some significant part of the drop in birth rates?

I don't get it, as usual, since the loss of religiosity correlates so much more. But I am curious what the next 'green' panic will be.

People who use essential oils and people who care about micro plastics are an overlapping Venn diagram.

Because everything is made of plastic these days.

There was a time when people didn't worry about lead pipes or asbestos either.

Microplastics in our environment are a major issue. Even more so when they contain BPA and other endocrine disruptors. Not only are testosterone levels dropping but penile lengths are shrinking for babies exposed to high levels of them in utero. And, yes, microplastics have been found in placenta.

They also contribute to ADHD and who knows what other conditions.

Well, drop in birth rates can't be because western people are becoming more selfish and children are viewed more as a burden rather than a gift and feminism has put career ahead of becoming a mom so women who have worked to establish their career do want to become moms, they are doing it in mid to late 30s where pregnancy risks are much higher and you have less time to have more kids.

But, microplastics.

The study is that comparatively to past generations T levels are lower

I haven't dove into the study, just read and listened to some reports of the study

They also said we consume something like a credit cards worth of plastic a week or month? Can't remember exactly

In all seriousness, we should all want to lessen the amount of plastics in our bodies. That's probably a good thing to do.

Another interesting angle that does not require making plastics, oil & gas, produced foods, etc is the idea that our metabolism is changing not so much from the "evil" things mentioned but simply by the fact we have it so damn good. Air condition, desk jobs, incredibly individual and societal wealth.

A more comfortable, sedentary lifestyle with abundant resources, medicine and food may be the ultimate culprit to things like low T, small weenuses, soyboys, incels, neck beards and the like.

No, I do not worry about windblown dust either. Dust is mainly quartz which will pass right thru the gut, just like plastic. On the other hand dust can lodge in the lungs... May be I should be worried.

Microplastics, BPAs, PFAS, and hosts of other terrible chemicals are problematic and infected everything on the planet.

What we can do about it? TBD as we study and understand the long term effects of exposure to them.

Hard to isolate society wide given how much in our social environment has changed over the last 30 years in addition to the chemical exposures.

Don't ever be on team flaming Libs for anything. They're insane. Climate change doesn't exist, man-made climate change really doesn't exist. You've got 1000 things you could worry about before micro plastics.

Driving your car on a daily basis is more dangerous to you than anything a liberal can come up with.

I tried to avoid it whenever possible. It has proven negative effects on humans and the environment. I don't freak out about it because it is basically unavoidable. I would prefer if we pivoted away from plastics even if it meant would had less stuff that was higher quality.

There are other things going on in the environment I am much more worried about than microplastic in regard to human health or otherwise.

I cut as many plastics out of my food storage as possible. It is used ubiquitously though so not sure how much difference it makes. But I won't heat anything in plastic or coated paper plates. Only use glass and cast iron now.

Ironically, the paper straws are full of PFAS, which is about to be ruled a hazardous substance by the EPA.

Too late. It's already political on this very thread.

That aside, this is a significant danger to our present day wellbeing. It is said that Americans ingest about a credit card worth of plastic per week. Some estimates are higher. Some are lower. Not all leaves our bodies.

Some of the things we can do about it are well within our control. Use less plastic especially in cookware. Ditch the cheap water bottles for metal and/or glass. Wash your clothes made from petroleum-based materials before you wear them the first time.

It matters.

Tire wear is a significant portion of the microplastics out in the environment, which are basically unavoidable for most people.

I can't even believe I am about to respond to this because I am so behind on work. First reading the post and premise, my thinking was being totally open, even when posters said it had a hard liberal slant. Should be an empirical question right? I always try to go to the source (although in this case I just got to an article from a website called Environmental Health News (red flag 1).

Then you have, before the article even starts, a pic of a young white lib (I assumed) above and talking down to a dumbfounded young black male (red flag 2).

Then a study of 6 testes (probably 3 dudes; red flag 3)

Saying they found rice-sized plastic in semen (red flag 4)

Published out of CHINA (red flag end-game)

Except you can impact it. The free market has literally provided alternative packaging etc etc

You're just choosing convenience over the logic of your better senses

What's worse is we're poisoning our children because we're so effing lazy

You can choose not to poison your family.

All good decisions require a little sacrifice. They always have in my life
