There is some sort of mid-Western obsession with IPA's here that I just don't understand. The craft brews in the area are about 2/3 IPA's. We do get Shiner up here, but not very many of the short runs that they are really good at. I miss Texas beers.

Unfortunately that obsession drifted in from the west coast and east coast. An IPA is easy to make because the only flavor that matters is the hops. The malt and yeast flavors are irrelevant. Making a good beer without hops takes actual skill. As a result most IPAs are a crappy beer hiding beneath the overwhelming flavor of a nickel that's been sitting at the bottom of the urinal at the Dixie Chicken

Floral IPAs, especially hazy, tend to be pretty good and something I like.

Old school IPAs that taste as if you're licking a pine tree suck ass.

I used to like the dark "west coast" IPA's, but can't stomach them anymore...and just a few of them give me a neck and headache the next morning that twice the amount of any other beer would not.

That being said, I think there are a lot of IPA haters that would like the "east coast" Hazy IPA's. I love a good hazy and find that I can drink more of it than the dark syrupy beers.

On a tangent...the Hazy seems more "west coast" style, while I would have always guessed the traditional dark IPA's were an east coast beer. Hazy's are great outdoor sunny warm weather beer, whereas traditional IPA's seem more ideal for sitting inside on a wintery day.

This is very true. I also like regular Pale Ale's better than a lot of IPA's. You get a beer that has a decent amount of hop flavor, but isn't trying to beat you over the head with extreme hop like it's a beer version of a biggest dick contest.

Porters and stouts are definitely good, but they're generally also heavy and best consumed in cooler weather.

Problem with Texas? It's rarely cool.

But yeah, the hops covers up a lot of beer that isn't all that good. It also mimics estrogen and enlarges manboobs. See: Brewer's Droop
