Iran needs to be put out of business for good; they are a big supplier of weaponry to the Putin special operation

If this tweet/X post is accurate, then Iran could be at a tipping point. Iran has always talked a big game about eliminating Israel because Hamas and Hezbollah were their army. Now with Hamas and soon to be Hezbollah decimated, the Iranian mullahs have only one alternative to save face in the ME and that is to attack Israel themselves. However, Iran doesn't want to do that because they know they'd lose, and I think normal Iranians know that. Imo, if we had a strong President, then we'd be arming the bubbling resistance within Iran to give them the means to finish off the mullahs once and for all.

If the Lebanese army (not certain of its actual fighting strength) wanted to take control of the country, now would be the time. Hezbollah has set back Lebanon a few centuries, this could ignite a larger power shift in Lebanon knowing how crippled H is now.
It is complicated. Hezbollah has a fighting arm and a political one and they are sometimes in disagreement. Their political arm is more popular than their fighting one. Their fighting one (at least prior to the last few months) is more powerful than the Lebanese military by an order of magnitude.

Due to a complicated power-sharing system of government established by the Lebanese constitution, the government power is essentially evenly split between Sunni, Shia, and Christians. The military (by custom and agreement) is run by the Maronite Catholics (but consists of people of all faiths) and 85% of their equipment is American or European.

Most of the Sunni and Christian population would love to see Hezbollah eliminated but that doesn't mean they like Israel or would support Israeli action on Lebanese territory.

It's my personal belief (completely speculative) that elements of the Lebanese military are likely providing intelligence support for Israel with the help of the US. They cannot go public with this and must maintain an image of "anti-Israel aggression" to quell the less than 1/3 or so of the population who at least want the political branch of Hezbollah to remain a force in the country. The political branch of Hez is popular because they perform a lot of charitable acts, food distribution, etc.

I agree with everything except the last statement. Hezz has popular support in Lebanon for the same reason Hamas does in Israel- a Palestinian population.

Iran has to be seething right now.

What amazes me the most is that Hezbollah seemed to be the more powerful of the two, between them and Hamas. Yet, they're being so thoroughly dismantled.

If this is true (and it's the Internet so who knows) this is why Hezbollah didn't retaliate last night. There was literally nobody left to give the command to retaliate.

Israel has seen some amazing victories over its enemies since its re-formation in 1948, but this is a stunningly complete crushing of Hezbollah. You'd think other Arabs would have learned by now that you forfeit your life when you attack Israel. They will hunt you down and kill you, and you are powerless to stop it.

This is what real deterrence looks like. I am thankful they are willing to place their lives and fortunes at risk to take out those who are also mortal enemies of the United States.

Great news this week.

I don't see Iran doing anything directly, proxies/martyr's are there goto and putin is influencing them to stay out because his supply chain would be at risk.

That's a really nice way of saying that iran is way too chicken**** to ever confront Israel directly. If they don't have their proxies to do the dirty work then they're not going to do squat. Russian supply chain security is just as good of an excuse as any.

Which puts the mullahs behind the 8 ball and they know it. They can't hide behind Russia as a deterrent anymore.

Extraordinary opportunity right now to reshape the playing field in the ME. Syria is still a mess. The Egyptians have no appetite for more wars.

The conspiracy theorist in me wants to believe Western hemming and hawing has been insincere and a cover for Israel setting up the pieces before the most impressive knockout punch in history.

The realist in me thinks that's probably not correct.

Iran uses proxies since they found out in Beirut back in the 80s that proxies work. Even if we know they are behind it the rules of war make it difficult to retaliate against them

Maybe. Or maybe their pagers had tracking capabilities in addition to the explosives they had on board. I'm probably wrong, but anybody that would have had the knowledge of what their top leadership was up to and where they would be located & when probably died alongside them in the Israeli strikes

I mean, they've already done that. I feel like they shot their shot in April and they failed miserably. This is why, I think, they were looking at deescalating prior to Israel taking the head shot yesterday.
