Heading into the Southern tip of Gaza at the crossing with Egypt.

Quote:

Netanyahu Orders Military to Make Plans to Evacuate Civilians in Rafah
. . .
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has ordered the Israeli military to come up with a plan for civilians sheltering in the southern city of Rafah to evacuate, his office said on Friday, clearing the way for an expected offensive into the crowded city.
. . .
In recent weeks, roughly 1.4 million Palestinians have squeezed into Rafah one of the last areas of the Gaza Strip in which Israeli ground troops have yet to deploy in force.
. . .
But it is not clear where those people could go. Many of them have fled from towns and cities farther north in the enclave, devastated by war, where fighting continues and basic supplies are critically short, and Israel has said they cannot yet return. Egypt has sealed the border and Cairo so far has shown no inclination to let large numbers of Palestinian refugees cross, in part because of fears they will never be allowed to return.
. . .
In a statement, the Israeli prime minister's office said that it could not realize Israel's aim of eliminating Hamas's rule in Gaza while leaving intact what it said were battalions of the group's fighters in Rafah.

The military's "combined plan" would have to both "evacuate the civilian population and topple the brigades," it added.

Israeli leaders have made clear in recent days that they intend to extend the invasion of Gaza into Rafah, on the border with Egypt. On Wednesday, Mr. Netanyahu said the Israeli security establishment was preparing to operate in the densely crowded area.

"Our soldiers are now in Khan Younis, Hamas's main stronghold." his office later wrote on social media. "They'll soon go into Rafah, Hamas's last bastion."

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, based in the occupied West Bank, demanded that Israel's allies put pressure on its government not to send troops into Rafah.
. . .
Good luck with that last bit PMFA.

Once the operation in Rafah finishes up, I'll be curious if Israel maintains a permanent presence in Gaza, or if they'll repair to the (now) much more heavily guarded border. Absent being there in considerable force it's hard to imagine the IDF would want to maintain what amounts to targets at checkpoints as in the West Bank (especially in the urban centers), but there are political considerations as well.

I wouldn't give anything back to those animals. Exile them into the desert and let nature take care of the rest of them.

A real drama: in Operation Zahir tonight, our forces rescued two hostages from Hamas captivity. The abductees Louis Har and Fernando Simon Marman were rescued safely from a hiding apartment in Rafah and are now receiving primary medical treatment in Tel Hashomer. Give thanks to God for he is good, for his mercy endures forever

No way in hell everyone there didn't know. You can't bring in that kind of power and data connections and all that equipment without people knowing, much less dig the ****ing tunnels.

Two days later, two Argentine / Israeli citizens are freed from Hamas by IDF commandos.

I don't see how the UNRWA has the credibility to continue to exist after what has been revealed about their collaboration with and infiltration by Hamas. They should be cut off from UN funding and shut down. IF they are replaced, it has to be with entirely new leadership and all of the current employees should be banned from being employed by the new organization.

So how many hostages are still unaccounted for or being held? How this admin and the media don't shout that from the roof tops, instead of making plans to negotiate with the hostage takers is criminal.

I don't think Israel has any plans to let anybody on the outside administer anything in Gaza for the time being. If they do, I suspect they will have to go through Israeli security reviews and inspections as part of being allowed to operate.

Screw the electric bill. The only donations UNRWA donors should be considering is the cost to haul out the rubble that used to be their headquarters.

Israeli Hostages Families to file war crimes case against Hamas at the International Criminal Court
Quote:

The Hague, The NetherlandsCNN
About 100 family members of Israeli hostages, including two former hostages, arrived in the Dutch city of The Hague on Wednesday to file a legal complaint against Hamas at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
The complaint, spearheaded by the Hostage and Missing Families Forum (HMFF), calls for the ICC to prosecute Hamas's leaders for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity over the killing, kidnapping and sexual violence carried out during the October 7 terrorist attack.
The ICC's chief prosecutor Karim Khan is already investigating potential war crimes committed by both Hamas and Israel since October 7, but has yet to file any charges.

For many of the families, lodging the complaint is about accountability as well as their latest effort to call attention to the captivity of their loved ones.
---
Israel is not a party to the Rome Statute, which established the ICC, and does not recognize its jurisdiction. But the court's judges have ruled that it does have jurisdiction over actors in Gaza and other Palestinian territories.

For that reason, said Shelly Aviv Yeini, head of the international law department at the HMFF, the ICC could make Hamas accountable.
"We are an NGO, a private entity," Yeini said. "We can bring about a claim in the name of the hostages even if the state [Israel] doesn't recognize its [the ICC's] jurisdiction."
Muhammad Nazzal, a member of the Hamas political bureau, told CNN that going to the ICC was "a mistake," adding: "The shortest way to return their prisoners is to complete the ongoing negotiating process."
https://www.cnn.com/2024/02/14/middleeast/israeli-hostage-families-war-crimes-complaint-intl/index.html

Not sure I would trust the ICC, or any international body to adjudicate a complaint since there is a UN institutional history of discrimination against Israel.

This is the weirdest hostage scenario I have ever seen with the US taking the side of the hostage takers and demanding a cease fire before Israel moves into the last area where the hostages could be held. I am struggling with the basis for our willingness to do so while some of the hostages are or were American citizens. We seem focused on stopping Israel, when the easy answer is for Hamas to release the hostages in return for not having Israel invade Rafah.

You would think that since some of our US citizens are being held hostage by the Palestinians, Biden would be all in on this but <crickets>.

Whereas Teddy Roosevelt said "Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead".
