I have already seen this movie. It ended in 1983 in Beirut with a bunch of dead Marines. I have no interest whatsoever in seeing it again. I would rather just go directly to the sequel where the Navy sat offshore and pounded them with 16-inch guns.

Would likely involve Turkey, Egypt, Jordan. Erdogan gets to play the hero to his home base while simultaneously negotiating with Israel about normalization.

Something that hasn't been reported much is that Turkey was also in the process of renormalizing with Israel after some falling out when Erdogan took over. He and Netanyahu were scheduled to meet in November. Again, the last thing Iran wants is Israel, Saudi Arabia, and especially Turkey working together on anything.

We will offer to provide Bechtel. The worlds largest private construction company.

They can go in, crush the concrete rubble, build it back nicer than it was before and those that want to stay can stay and live in a nice neighborhood. (and by those I mean those left alive after the Israelis wipe anyone and everyone else off the face of the Earth because thats what they are going to do).

No need for troops because there wont be a thug left alive to hold so much as a rock.

Nothing short of a solution Israel isn't willing to stoop to will fix Gaza. The indoctrination of hate and the martyrdom of "courageous" Hamas fighters brave enough to abuse women and children will be passed down to many of the young and, like cancerous cells, over time something like Hamas will grow again. The difference this time needs to be that Israel hits hard enough that people at least think twice about whether or not carrying out on their hate is worth it, and, I passionately hope, Israeli citizens especially living in remote areas have learned a hard lesson that relying upon a few security people to safeguard an entire community isn't enough. They need to go full Texan and the next Hamas einsatzgruppen that rolls in needs to make it about three steps past the fence when they get opened up on from 20 positions. Never again.

"Disproportionate retaliation" is such BS. Would they prefer Israel to kidnap and/or murder women and children instead?

Stay the course Israel. Cut the head off the snake.

It may be morbid, but it would be interesting to see the UN's reaction if the IDF just sent a raiding party into Gaza and murdered 1400 women and children in the streets in the most brutal ways they could find and then took 200 random captives back.

If they really want a proportionate response to heinous barbarism, maybe they should be fixed too consider what that looks like.

F that noise. We can provide material support and intelligence like we have always done, but we shouldn't even consider putting our servicemen into the mix. All that will gain would be to save muslim terrorists travel time to kill Americans.

Stupid, stupid, stupid idea
Yeah, it would turn into another of our "police actions" that lasts for 10 or 15 years, costing too many lives and way too much money. We have American problems of our own to deal with.

Total genocide is the only way to stop it, but that won't happen. A very severe retaliation is the only way to keep it from happening for a long time. As long as muslim roaches and other roaches exist, it will happen again.

Agreed.

If not for our support for the past forever Israel would've been wiped away from existence by too many people to count, and I'm fine with being their benefactors in that sense, but for us I give lives is the step too far.

As we have seen in Russia the older tanks and IFVs can serve a purpose as defensive weapons. No point having your newest weapon systems just sit there as deterrents.

Israel has said it over and over but they know at the end of the day they are on their own, all it takes is one US president to come in that has a hatred for Israel. We saw what Obama did giving money to Iran and terrorist groups.

Yemen has been in a civil war and a war with Saudi for close to a decade. The US has sold SA some of the most advanced weapon systems in the world yet can't defeat the Houtis. Let them keep fighting it out so the good ole military industrial complex can keep selling to one of its largest customers.

Egypt actually has…over 1,000 M60's. It's not like they will be rolling against a swarm of Merkava's, though.

Make no mistake, the egyptians have an immense amount of armor (and a not real wonderful history of employing it), including domestically produced Abrams, but this again is not going to be a huge armored battle, their real intent is as stated, to deter the Gazans from pouring through. As such, it doesn't matter how old the chassis the machine guns are bolted to, is.

Here is a very good article over at RCD about the prospect/utility/practicality of rapidly flooding the tunnels.

Quote:

The Gaza tunnel system, mostly constructed over the last forty years, provides Hamas with offensive access to Israel. It also constitutes the terrorist organization's most formidable defensive redoubt. The tunnels present by far the most difficult logistical problem for Israel in eliminating enemy targets. Open-source maps show at least eleven independent tunnel networks, some nearly adjacent to the sea. The number of independent networks, however, could far exceed that. Hamas claims that the total length of the tunnels is about three hundred miles.

The geography of Gaza argues strongly for the stratagem of flooding the tunnels. It would force the enemy above ground where they can more easily be destroyed, dramatically reduce the Israeli casualties required to accomplish that task and resolve the problem of dealing with parts of the tunnels that are too deep to destroy through bombing. Most importantly, flooding is a permanent or near-permanent solution to the Gaza tunnel problem. Once accomplished, pumping them out enough to be usable again would be both extremely costly andespecially in conjunction with bombingexceptionally difficult. The timing of executing a flooding strategy is flexible; some could be flooded now, others later, and still others once they're discovered.

The engineering is straightforward. Egypt flooded thirty-seven cross-border tunnels in southern Gaza back in 2015 in what stands as a practical proof of concept in this location. Seawater from the Mediterranean would be pumped directly into the tunnel openings through short pipelines. While there's little hydrological head, there is also little topographical relief to deal with in laying the pipe. Large volumes of water are pumped long distances every day, and Israeli water technology is world class.

The shortest and most direct route to the tunnel entrances would be directly from the Mediterranean. This would require kinetic clearing of the construction sites and holding them for the duration of the operation to protect the temporary water transmission lines. The distance that would need to be cleared and held could be minimized on the northernmost and eastern tunnels by running a trunk line through adjacent Israeli territory and feeding water distribution lines to the tunnel entrances off that.
Flooding doesn't have to be slow. A six-by-five-foot tunnel that runs 300 miles is a huge volume to fill, but how fast it fills depends on how fast the water is pumped. Rough calculations indicate that if a single pipe were used for each of eleven tunnels, with each pipe pumping at a very conservative 100 gallons per minute, it would take about seven and a half months for all eleven tunnel networks to fill. Pumping water at ten times that rate, however, is routinely done today everywhere from wastewater treatment plants to oil field operations. Also, the tunnels wouldn't have to be filled to capacity to generate the desired effect. The effect would begin as soon as water started to flow; by the time a tunnel has two or three feet of water it would be effectively unusable.

The collateral damage to infrastructure should be minimal. The distances are short, the diameter of the required pipe is small, and the pipelines would run very close to the surface. As with the Egyptian tunnel operations, the impact of flooding on groundwater salinization would no doubt be raised. The extent of saltwater leakage through the tunnels into local groundwater would depend on the depth and construction of the tunnels and the configuration of the local aquifer. Gaza's shallow aquifer is already over-depleted, however, and ninety-five percent of its groundwater was considered unfit for public consumption as far back as 2017. The reason is that it's extensively contaminated with chemicals and sewage, as well as saltwater intrusion from the Mediterranean due to a long history of over pumping. Because of that, Gaza relies heavily on desalinization for potable water.

In the short term, think of flooding Gaza's tunnels as humanitarian assistance. By eliminating the need to keep bombing them, flooding would reduce civilian casualties and other collateral damage. In the long term, think of denying Hamas access to the tunnels as an A2AD stratagem. At the end of the war, there can be no complete destruction of Hamas, nor long-term peace out of Gaza, unless and until the Gaza tunnels are taken out.

I wonder what the leakage rate would be. Over time the water would leak out of the tunnels into the some of the sand floors. Is that a year, 5 years, 10 years???? After the water leaks out, are the tunnels then reusable or are they now useless?

"In the Islamic World today… some Muslims are concerned with two things. First they abhor the secularism of Western Society, which separates religion from politics, church from state. Second they would like to see their societies governed according to the Shariah, the sacred law of Islam" . " For a devout Muslim politics is what Christians would call a sacrament. It is an activity the must be sacrelized so that it becomes a channel of the divine." Karen Armstrong, The Battle for God. 2000

When you couple this 'sacred duty' with the Hamas Covenant of 1988 you can understand coexist is a pipe dream. Containment perhaps.

The main issue that retired foreign service officer didn't address is that it could contaminate the freshwater supply used by the populace (on both sides). Israel's not going to entirely withdraw from Gaza again so the long term prospects of the tunnels being re-used in a future conflict…is low in that timeframe, and beyond that timeframe the tunnels will be…not real stable, especially the deeper ones, if not maintained. (This is also an earthquake prone region, generally.)
