It was important to contain Russia by having an ally in control of the only way to get from the Black Sea to the Med, and having Incirlik available to support the GWOT was important. But Erdogan has his own ambitions to be a rival to Iran and the Saudis in the Arab world, and his efforts to muck things up in Syria on behalf of some of the nastier actors over there are concerning to say the least.American Hardwood said:

They were a great ally while they had a professional secular military leadership that would step in whenever necessary to prevent the country from sliding into islamist rule. Erdogan gathered enough power together and decapitated that military leadership and replaced them with his own people. He has been hell bent on having Turkey become the next "Islamic Republic" ever since.chiphijason said:

Masri, who had reportedly been advising President Trump's hostage envoy about postwar plans for the Gaza Strip, drew widespread acclaim for his work in developing the "futuristic" city of Rawabi in the West Bank and allegedly took millions of dollars US government funding for other projects in Gaza.
But those properties included "terror infrastructure" later uncovered by the Israel Defense Forces, according to the complaint, including tunnels at an industrial park just yards from the Israel border and a base of operations with rocket sites at two ritzy hotels on the Mediterranean.
Masri, who has a home in DC, oversaw construction projects at the sites through a holding company, Massar International, and businesses like the Palestine Development and Investment Company (PADICO), which he chairs.

Lead Willkie Farr lawyer Lee Wolosky formerly served in legal and national security roles under former Presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton as well as White House special counsel for the 46th president.
Gary Osen, another lead attorney in the case, has represented the families of hundreds of Holocaust victims including Jews whose relatives had artworks seized by Nazis.
Masri's office denounced the "baseless" suit in a Monday statement, adding: "Neither he nor those entities have ever engaged in unlawful activity or provided support for violence and militancy. Bashar Masri has been involved in development and humanitarian work for the past decades."
The civil suit alleged that Masri violated the Anti-Terrorism Act in "knowingly" assisting Hamas before the Oct. 7, 2023, attack that killed 1,200 people including 46 US citizens. Another 254 were taken hostage and held in Gaza.
PADICO board member Dr. Dalal Iriqat posted on X the same day as the Oct. 7 attack that the atrocities Hamas committed were part of a "normal human struggle."
Masri had admitted a decade ago to helping with "planning" the First Intifada of 1987 against Israel but since burnished a public image of being a peacemaker in the West Bank and Gaza, earning him grants and other investments from the United Nations, European Union, World Bank and the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

The office repeatedly earned the ire of Republican lawmakers for its anti-Israel advocacy during the Biden-Harris administration. In the early hours of Hamas's October 7 attack, the OPA called on Israel to stand down and forgo any retaliation. Subsequent legislation sought to rein in the office, mandating it periodically report on its public diplomacy and advocacy efforts.
The Biden administration created the OPA in June 2022 against Israel's wishes, endowing it with the power to operate independently of the American embassy. It has come under fire in the past for its potential violation of the Jerusalem embassy Act of 1995, which mandated that a single U.S. embassy be established in the Israeli capital.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu showed a desire for a gradual reduction of security and military assistance received from the US, amid differences with the Trump administration, local media reported on Monday.
"I think we will need to wean ourselves off American military aid," Netanyahu told the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee late on Sunday, according to the Israeli daily Maariv.
Netanyahu said Israel gets an annual amount of $4 billion to procure weapons, but Israel may move to abandon it, as was done with the economic aid.
The Israeli premier, however, did not provide further details on the motives behind such a surprise statement which comes at a time when Netanyahu's relations with US President Donald Trump see a clear tension, and amid reports that Trump cut off direct contact with Netanyahu, believing that Netanyahu is manipulating him.

Sinwar, a senior Hamas military commander, is the younger brother of the former Hamas leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by the IDF in southern Gaza last October.
Following the killing of Hamas's top military commander, Muhammad Deif, last July, Muhammad Sinwar took charge of the terror group's military wing. Later, after Sinwar's older brother was killed by IDF troops, he became the de facto leader of the terror group in the Gaza Strip.
Israeli officials have described Muhammad Sinwar as obstinate with regard to negotiations with Hamas for the release of hostages, and an obstacle to reaching a ceasefire deal.
The younger Sinwar is also wanted for terrorist actions against Israel and has been active in Hamas for decades.
He was jailed by Israel in the 1990s for nine months and spent an additional three years in a Palestinian Authority prison in Ramallah, from which he escaped in 2000. In 2006, Sinwar was part of a Hamas cell that abducted IDF soldier Gilad Shalit. He also previously commanded Hamas's Khan Younis Brigade.

Israel reported Sunday it found the body of Hamas' de facto leader, Muhammad Sinwar, in a tunnel in Khan Younis after he was killed in a series of airstrikes last week.
At least 100 people have been killed in the latest series of airstrikes, and Sinwar's body was found as Hamas has offered to release nine hostages in exchange for a 60-day military cease-fire in an effort to slow down the fighting in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.
Sinwar was the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, the former Hamas leader in Gaza. Another brother, Zakaria Sinwar, was killed in an airstrike Saturday night, other reports claimed. It's the third Sinwar brother to be killed in the ongoing battle.
Israeli forces overtook a hospital in northern Gaza on Saturday as an offensive to seize territory on the Gaza Strip continues, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
Forces seized the Indonesian hospital in Beit Lahia, preventing patients, staff and medical supplies from arriving, the ministry said on Sunday, according to the BBC, leaving the medical facility inoperable.
Hamas made its hostage release offer on Saturday following a new round of peace negotiations in Qatar. Officials said there could also be a larger deal in the works to end the fighting that would include a Hamas withdrawal.

The witnesses said Israeli tanks opened fire on crowds around 1,000 yards from the new aid site

Spokesperson BG Effie Defrin said in a video posted on X: 'I'm here in the city of Rafah. So far we have opened four distribution centres.
'We have already distributed over 16,000 packages of food to the people. Hamas is doing its best to stop us from doing so. It is spreading rumours and fake news. I urge you not to believe every rumour spread by Hamas. We will investigate every one of those incidents.'
