In the past we would have seen that as an act of war and responded with overwhelming force against those responsible.

Yeah that was an IDF strike, not sure why the link/claim was made as to a US one. It was a meeting of Iranian commanders at his compound in Syria.

I guess they got themselves a new leader ("Deputy Secretary General) overnight. Let's see if this one makes it through lunch.

Lebanese government finally feeling domestic pressure. they agree this morning to deploy Lebanese Army south of the Litani River in accordance with UN Resolution 1701

https://www.msn.com/en-ae/news/middleeast/lebanon-pm-ready-to-implement-2006-deal-on-hezbollahs-armed-presence-south-of-litani-river/ar-AA1rsyzx?ocid=BingNewsSerp

This is most likely an attempt to stave off Israeli invasion. In normal times, it might have triggered civil war in Lebanon with Hez. But with Hez neutered as of now, who knows.

Yes this is a big development if this is implemented. Lebanon as a country has its divk cut off from Hez and another cut if Israel comes in. At some point they need to stand up to Hezbollah and hold firm.

To put things in perspective Hezbollah has been around and been controlling, or trying to, Lebanon since 1982. After Israel left in 1983 Hezbollah start attacking US troops, after 3 VBIEDs that killed hundreds of soldiers, mainly US Marines there for peace keeping, the US pulled out as well.

I think it was early 1984, maybe late 1983, Hezbollah attacked some Israeli's and Israel went through a community and killed hundreds of Hezbollah troops and supporters, including women and children. Hezbollah was terrified of Israel and when Israel left it was fair game.

Since their founding Hezbollah has been a proxy for Iran, Syria, and Russia. Iran leadership is in hiding, Russia has it's hands full in Ukraine, so the next attacks need to focus on taking out al-assad's. They have been in power since 1971 and have been responsible for killing tens, if not hundreds of thousands of innocents. Sounds like they took out Bashar's brother and I assume he is in hiding now.

This hasn't been possible at all. Hezbollah was literally the only political entity with any strength in much of Lebanon, especially the south, running things like schools/security/police etc. It became the dominant force in Lebanese politics not for the hate/religion/conquest of Israel/Jews etc, but because it was…a sole actor that exterminated other threats to it's rise to power. All that is why disarming/disempowering them became a political and practical impossibility.

Now that could change (perhaps even with Israel's further help), but the real colonizer has been/is the Iranian migration of Shia/money/weapons/drug trafficking into Lebanon/Beirut. It will be fascinating to see how this plays out from here, hopefully somehow less tragic than the past 40 years for Lebanon.

I've worked with/spoken with several doctors with Lebanese roots and it really seems like it was a great place, before all this crap happened.

Assad and his clan are a conduit for all things Iranian in Lebanon. Their days are (very) numbered it appears. Guess Assad now has expendable guys who dial his phone, turn on the TV with the remote, etc. in case things go boom boom.

That was beautiful. From your lips to God's ears, Bibi. Praying that all parties can see the wisdom & truth of every word that he said and work together to make it happen.

Bibi indicating an Iranian regime change is his goal?
Or, at a minimum, neuter them to ensure peace for the next generation?
At some point Israel's strategy of playing defense and fending them off is just a slow drip towards annihilation.
Escalation is clearly in the cards.

I mean, basically all territory in-between Iran and Saudi Arabia is the battleground for Shia vs Sunni, so if one side is neutered I guess it would help Israel

I have black and white photos of Beirut in the 1950s that my Great Aunt and her husband visited. It was beautiful even in black and white.

Detectable by sensors? Emitted a signal detectable through 30 meters of concrete/earth?
Interesting.

Someone said it here before, but Israel is the de facto standard bearer for western civilization right now.

I guess that answers the question of how the Lebanese Army will retake the south from Hezbollah. Let Israel go in and clean them out, then the Lebanese Army can move back in and take over.

The ridiculous internet rumor regarding this is they paid a mole to shake his hand 5 months ago and supposedly this injected him with some sort of nanoparticle.

My guess is that story is a psyop to make Hez more paranoid.

It's far more likely they have human intelligence working with them from inside Hezbollah and the IRGC.

Wouldn't you think that the phones and pagers which were charged to blow when commanded had also some type of tracking devices in them that let the Israelis 'paint a picture' of underground tunnels over the months or years? They probably had an idea of where meeting rooms were beforehand.
