"California will become the first state in the nation to impose an excise tax on gun and ammunition sales under a measure signed into law Tuesday by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Starting next July, the state will collect an 11% tax on retail sales of guns, gun parts and ammunition."

Gavin calls it a sin tax:

"This is not a general income tax, it's not a corporate tax, it's from my perspective more of a sin tax,"

Yes, you have the right to bear arms, but you can't afford to.

If you are conservative, my rec would be to leave Cali asap.

Seems like something the courts would strike down…you know…the whole "shall not be infringed" thing. A sin tax on a constitutional right seems…unconstitutional.

This is becoming the primary strategy of the progressive tyranny takeover. Make everything so expensive that no one can afford it except the super wealthy elites. They can't limit your freedoms through legislation very easily, so they just make everything so expensive that you no longer have the freedom to own anything. The most apparent and successful attacks on freedom the left makes are attacks on the free market.

Cities have taxed guns and ammo purchases but not a state. Not sure if it's ever been challenged though.

We can't legislatively take away what we don't like so we'll tax you into submission

The state and municipalities in Texas all get tax money from firearm and ammo sales.... same as most other goods. But not an additional "sin" tax.

Yes, but Im talking about a special excise tax on just guns and ammo, not a general sales tax. Some cities have special taxes.

If upheld, this will just drive up sales outside the state. Stores will pop up near the borders.

Crazy.

Let's tax law abiding citizens legally buying guns and ammo. That will fix "gun violence"

Oh wait, the majority of gun violence in California is used with guns not purchased legally. Go figure.

Make it harder for law abiding citizens to buy guns.
Make it easier to commit crimes.

What could go wrong?

Wish I had it available but there's a chart that shows an inverse relationship between gun ownership and crime, it might have been murder. More guns means less crime

Alcohol is not explicitly recognized in the constitution as a fundamental right.

Like taxing someone on the side of the road if they refuse a search of their car, or taxing you for exercising you right to speech.

Think of the endless new revenue streams for the govt!

Tax for speaking in public
Tax for attending church
Tax for protesting
Tax for voting
Tax for refusing to house soldiers
Tax for pleading the 5th
Tax for requesting a speedy trial
Tax for not having cruel and unusual punishment

Grew up in a country where mostly bad guys have guns.

Women face the brunt of the crime. Maybe that will wake up the middle class white lib women. But i doubt it, you can take a donkey to water, but you can't make it drink.

Hell, I'd bet good money that he'll feel comfortable enough to actually bring it up during the campaign as one of his promises. He'll have the media support behind him obviously. And don't be mistaken by the echo chamber that this board tends to be - we might be appalled by it, but I bet he'd attract a not insignificant amount of voters just by this alone.

At that point it'd be crucial to have an opponent who's a true supporter of the 2nd Amendment and be willing and intelligently fight back against this issue in the debates. As opposed to an opponent who's soft on 2nd Amendment rights and has voiced support in the past for "taking the guns first, then figuring everything out later".

And if this is something that he does actually voice support for during the campaign, just imagine what he'll keep on the down low until he after he gets elected.

They don't care about gun violence or crimes. They don't want law abiding citizens to own guns.
