Seems like a significant downside to EV ownership

A Mercedes-Benz EQE Sedan caught fire and burned to a crisp inside a Florida homeowner's garage last week, severely damaging the building.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE 350+ Sedan was in the garage when it caught fire on July 19. According to Jennifer Ruotolo, the EV was a loaner from Mercedes-Benz while her own car was getting serviced. She told News4Jax that the luxury electric sedan wasn't even charging when it burst into flames she doesn't own a home charging unit.

"It was parked in the garage, about 22 hours and then it caught fire. I was at work. About 8:30 and my husband heard a hiss and a pop, and he went into the garage full of smoke. It engulfed in flames and exploded," the Nocatee, Florida resident said.

I honestly worry about all the lithium batteries. My collection of 18v and 40v lithium tool batteries I have charging in the garage worry me - but I'm not sure what to do about it yet. I bought one of those fireproof storage bags, but you put a bunch of batteries together in a bag if one burns it just escalates.

Lithium batteries in general are a danger that people underestimate. Phones, laptops, random made in china stuff with a cheap battery that doesn't need a battery. We're going to see a lot more of this and not just cars

Claims probably rejected by both the car insurer and the home insurer for some obscure legaleez weasel words buried in the mountain of paperwork they create to disguise everything that is not covered.

He probably didn't get the required electrical engineering degree to advise those who installed the panel and charger and that's the root cause.

Based on the other thread, you have to be highly educated to purchase, charge and drive one of those EVs.

A battery fire has destroyed both of Speed One Racing's electric Lancia Delta World Rallycross cars. The two Lancia Delta Evo-e race cars were reportedly in the paddock at Lydden Hill Race Circuit in the UK on Friday morning when a fire originating in one of the cars' battery packs spread and consumed the team's road tent, taking both cars with it. The fire shut down the World Rallycross Championship event while race authorities attempted to ascertain the cause of the fire.

I have been told by a poster that the electrical system is so simple and EVs are so safe that you can do all the electrical work yourself for under $100 and charge, charge away.

So there are already building codes for garages to prevent CO from meandering into the house. But no regs to prevent battery fires from burning your house down. Interesting ain't it?

ICE vehicles are so dangerous that they can burn your house down even if parked OUTSIDE the garage.

Couple things:

- what's the ratio for ICE vs EVs currently owned and operated in the US? Guessing that would make a difference?

- like everything else the Left is pushing, are any EV fires being under-reported? No way right?

- are the EV fire hazards being recalled, prior to mass damages/casualty events, like the ICEs in the links?

I don't think you know me.

No, insurance companies generally rely on actuaries and data analysis rather than random articles of one off fires.

Has an ICE vehicle fire ever destroyed a large ship.

Are ICE vehicle fires almost impossible to extinguish?

ICE vehicles catch fire from improper engineering and can be fixed with recalls.

EV's catch fire because of the nature of EV's. There's no recall that can prevent one from exploding.

edit: from the article, "KHOU 11 learned there was a recall issued back in April on the same model for a missing gasket on an oil drain pipe that could lead to a fire."

That's hilarious, I knew you'd respond that way. You didn't complete the quote, of course.

"The cause of the fire that broke out last Tuesday remains unclear, though the vessel's owner has said one of the electric vehicles onboard may have been the source."

Here's another quote.

"In March 2022 a cargo ship carrying about 4,000 Volkswagen cars, including some electric models, caught fire and sank off the coast of the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean."

From what I've read and heard, the problem with these battery fires from EV's is that they're basically impossible to extinguish and can burn for a LONG time. So when these EV fires start, the solution is... let it burn and hope it won't sink a ship or burn a house down.

This is not good, but at least you're not foolishly, deceitfully telling us that EV's are safe, free and effective.

EPFD said the fire started in a car and made its way to the home.
