And Hollywood greatly exaggerates pretty much anything and everything based on a true story. We recently watched 80 For Brady, which is based on a true story, and about halfway in I just started laughing and called BS on the whole thing. My wife had read the book, I think, or the actual story about it, and told me that the film was at best 30% accurate.

Again, just not going to buy that rich white family that prints money is going to exploit a poor young black person. Or anyone for that matter. Highly unlikely.

Watch the movie The Natural.

Then read the book by Bernard Malamud...The ending will surprise (and if you're like me, infuriate) you.

The movie stuff is just thrown into this story to distract. Whether or not the movie was true or exaggerated really is irrelevant. That Oher is mad at the movie's inaccuracies is irrelevant.

He was told about the conservatorship by the Touhy's when it happened. He knew he wasn't an adopted family member. If he got confused on what a conservatorship vs adoption meant, that may be more on him and not the Touhy's.

They are worth 100s of millions. Way more than he has made in his NFL career or that they got off some movie deal. My feeling is they were controlling his funds via the conservatorship because they likely knew he didn't know how to manage it himself. Sean Touhy I'm sure has seen a number of kids blow their millions as he was around the basketball scene for years and knows the kind of element that surrounds young professional athletes (look at Ja Morant in Memphis as an example)

It also appears Oher has tried to threaten them with exposure to the media if they don't pay him. Any way you slice it, that's a shakedown. He finally appears to have found a lawyer willing to do it knowing full well the popular sentiment in today's climate is going to be the rich white family taking advantage of the poor black boy and right on cue the Twitter-ites delivered by railing against the Touhys.

I'm willing to believe Oher when I see proof that the family withheld "8 figures" from him via earnings from the movies or other earnings and did so with malice and intent to defraud and bilk him. Personally there seems something a little slimy about the Touhys and Freeze but that doesn't mean they are rooking someone they took in out of 10s of millions.

I don't know. I do know they were following what the NCAA was telling them how to do that. And maybe Oher's mother Denise would not agree to an adoption? I was curious as to why she was even involved in the conservatorship if her parental righs had been terminated back when Oher was 11 years old. Maybe that wasn't fully enacted? Who knows?

The other very odd thing is that the application for conservatorship was scheduled to expire by it's own terms when he turned 25 but that didn't make it into the final order for an unknown reason. There's a lot that is screwy here but not nearly as nefarious as the original story that came out from Oher this week.

If he wants to receive a share of their estate, pretty simple to take out some life insurance policies naming him the sole beneficiar and give the policy to him so the beneficiary cannot be changed.

In any event, it does not appear that the Tuohys exercised that much control over his other financial contracts with the NFL and whatever endorsement or book deals he made. My assumption is that they thought the conservatorship ended when he turned 25, years ago. Don't know that for sure but seems to track with other entities in dealing with the Tuohys and/or Oher.

This reminds me of the lady that managed to get knocked up by Jerry Jones and then mom and kid promptly sues Jerry looking for more money when she turned 18, even though the case settled years ago.

No, it is legal to adopt adults. Why I asked if his birth mother might not have agreed and her parental rights had not been fully terminated as assumed? If that were the case, that would track with why they went with what the NCAA was telling them they needed?

At the end of the day, they treated him as one of the family. Not just a roof over his head and guidance, but what appears to be genuine love and support.

Why does the "adoption" vs. "conservatorship" legal technicality matter from the perspective of Oher 20 years later, other than as a way to try to tarnish them in the court of public opinion? If he wasn't suing them, they would probably still be treating him as one of the family and nobody would know the difference.

It really does just sound like a shakedown.

In Texas you don't need birth parent permission to adopt adults FWIW...Don't know about TN or MS whichever one they were in...

I would think that adopting an adult would not allow for any control by the adopting parents over the life & finances of the adopted person, whereas a conservatorship gives control to the conservator for things like finances.

Adoption and conservatorship serve two different purposes, particularly when the subject is an adult.

I also wonder if the issue over adoption v conservatorship isn't a veiled criticism of something more like "you call me your son and made me call you mom and dad, but I'm not set to inherit 1/3 of your hundreds of millions"

It's hard to really know what poison got out into this man's head, but it really doesn't matter. The fact that he's carrying it around as a grown man is sad.

They may be terrible people, I have no idea. But I don't let terrible people consume my energy. Move on.

I don't know what to believe. But it seems like they benefitted by the "custodian" arrangement and entitled themselves to some of his money asa result. But then, when they die, he doesn't get to inherit from them because he wasn't formally adopted. That doesn't seem right if they truly valued him as an adopted son.

According to court records the birth mother was present in the courtroom for the hearing when the conservatorship was granted by the judge. Also Oher claims he just found that out in February of 2023 he wasn't adopted. Fact of the matter is, he wrote a book in 2011 "I Beat The Odds: From Homelessness, to The Blind Side, and Beyond,". In 2011, he acknowledged in that book on three separate occasions in that book, that there was in fact a conservatorship and he was fully aware of it. Maybe he has Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy and can't remember it.

From the facts coming out it appears this is going to demonstrate that the Touhy's did nothing wrong legally, and everyone on that side got the same share of the crappy Hollywood cut. Sandra Bullock may or may not give up her Oscar to show how much she loves black people, even though she will keep her cut of the Hollywood money.

The court of public opinion will vary. The grifter class will ignore all of that and complain this is yet another case of the rich white people screwing a poor black man (who got paid a a lot of money by the NFL not to mention whatever he got under the table at Ole Miss). Rich white liberals will clutch their pearls. Many white people will think all black people are grifters.

This is all so unnecessary and stupid.

Probably somewhere in the middle on all of this stuff.

I don't think Michael Oher has ever been thrilled about the book or movie portrayal of the whole story. The Tuohy's told it and their good friend wrote it and probably influenced it heavily… and they were able to do so since they had the conservatorship. Even if they've not profited much off the direct bits of the movie itself, they've surely all profited immensely from the externalities of their involvement.

As much as it pains me because I find all of Michael Lewis' books very great reads, he always omits really key bits of information in his books to stories in order to make them more entertaining and some of those bits potentially did paint Oher in maybe a bit of a more negative light when it came to his own abilities.

I dunno on this one… he was young when he signed this… I doubt there were real negative intentions with this one. But I'd wager pretty much anybody would be really upset if their story were told under the guise of it being authorized and 'true' by themselves, it painted them in a negative light and they had zero say in it.
