This is absolutely wild, and I hope that if Oher can prove this, that the family gets bankrupted.

Oher has always hated the film, and it appears he started getting suspicious of the family, and hired an attorney to look into it earlier this year. Will be interesting to see the legal and political fallout here.

Think the proof of him voluntarily living in their house and all the pictures like above make this case seem silly.

Also, where was his real family if he was "tricked" some people are just awful

Honestly, it just makes it more depressing. Dude thought he had a family, and they were secretly bilking money from his name.

Me thinks there is another (more logical) side to this story. Will be interesting to follow

Or...he's another Michael Bennett or Colin Kapernick, who turned on his benefactors years later.

As it appears they were basically stealing money from him, that doesn't seem to be the case here.

ever thought if they had not taken him in he wouldn't have been as successful?? Seems like this family stepped in for whatever reason when his couldn't be bothered.

Should be interesting to follow...dont know who to believe. Oher already has tried to take legal action in the past when he claimed that after the movie came out, NFL teams had higher performance expectations for him putting him at a disadvantage.

From the petition:
"The lie of Michael's adoption is one upon which Co-Conservators Leigh Anne Tuohy and Sean Tuohy have enriched themselves at the expense of their Ward, the undersigned Michael Oher," the legal filing says. "Michael Oher discovered this lie to his chagrin and embarrassment in February of 2023, when he learned that the Conservatorship to which he consented on the basis that doing so would make him a member of the Tuohy family, in fact provided him no familial relationship with the Tuohys."

So just six months ago, he discovered the plot of the Blindside was a lie? Presumably when he met with an attorney to discuss a potential lawsuit? Right...

Oher was already a successful student and athlete by the time the family took him in. He'd been bouncing around the foster system beforehand.

Why would he have reason to doubt he was adopted if they told him he was?

Especially if they lied to him about the difference. Honestly, I didn't really know the intricacies of those two until reading the article.

He's claiming he was cheated out of money based on the conservatorships vs. adoption status. He's just now learning he didn't get paid in 2023?

He made other allegations against them at least a decade ago.

This particular thing might be new, but they've been on the outs for years.

Definitely something shady.

I don't know a better way, but conservatorships seem ripe for abuse in the US.

Oher has made bank already, but it would be pretty BS if that family made all that money off him from the movie and didn't give him any of it.

I seem to recall a scene from the movie where LeighAnn is having lunch with her friends and one asks her if they are going to aopt him and she's he's almost 18 so reason to adopt him formally. The could petition to become his legal guardians because his father was dead and the state had terminated his mother's parental rights.

The article states that the family told him they didn't receive any money from the film. Only when he got suspicious earlier this year and investigated did he find they made millions from it by using his conservatorship to deny him any earnings.

Yep. I mentioned this over on the Premium thread, but the family's con-artist-like status was well known in writing circles.

Can we get a source for this or start me somewhere for research? I'd like to look see it for myself.

I'll wait for more facts, but the idea of making a movie about someone's struggles that early in his career seemed like a scammy type of money making move at the time.

The source? Me. Former sportswriter and now TV reporter. To my knowledge, no deep dive has been published about it (I could be wrong. I've been out of the writing game for nearly a decade now), but my guess is that's about to change.

They took him in when he was in high school, I find it really hard to believe that they had some sinister plan to profit of a 16 year old that they had no idea if he would have success at the next level or not. And the article on this from ESPN said that he knew the whole time that it was a conservatorship not an adoption and he voluntarily signed on.

I'm not calling it sinister, but even the most rose glasses people I've heard talking about the situation talked about how they were huge OM alums and them taking him in became a major reason for him going there.

I'm not saying their goals were to profit monetarily off of him, but I doubt he would have had the opportunity to be adopted by these people if he wasn't extremely good at football.

It's no secret. The Tuohys and Freeze used Oher to enrich themselves. Freeze got on staff at ol piss and and the Tuohys got a top recruit at their alma mater and paid handsomely at the same time.

They didn't adopt him out of the good of their heart. They saw the potential and everybody enriched themselves of Oher (including Oher himself). If they screwed him out of money, they will have to deal with that.

Freeze has always been a carny and supposedly so have Tuohys.

Its a good book but not like movie at all more focused on business side of being elite left tackle from what I remember.

This is why you never trust a "TRUE STORY" from Hollywood.
