He should get behind Desantis. Desantis could appoint Trump as AG and he could go scorched Earth on the Dems.

All of my circle of friends who are going to vote Trump in round one will be voting RD if RD wins round 1. There is no threat or animosity or cynical thoughts towards RD. We all will vote Trump Round 1. And Vote round two either Trump or RD whomever is left standing.

It sounds good in theory but it was never going to work for many reasons.

1. Trump can't win the General in '24 and that is more apparent all the time.
2. Trump and DeSantis are both Alphas and while they have a lot of policy positions in common they would clash.
3. Trump has a very bad habit of waking up on any given day and deciding he hates someone for a real or imagined slight and then going nuclear on them.
4. DeSantis is not one to put his fate in Trump's hands, he knows that risk is way too high when he is only 44. He can easily survive losing to Trump but if he ties himself to Trump and Trump goes down in flames he goes down too. Most of all he might go down in flames because of things that DeSantis disagrees with and he would have to excuse away Trump's "issues".
5. Trump would have a very, very hard time giving up his power and making someone his heir. Of course he would have to because of age and term limits but he would hate it and that would come across. If DeSantis was seen as more popular than him it would really bother him even if Trump is on his way out. Trump will also have to decide he doesn't want to pass the torch to his son or to one of his hardcore, died in the wool supporters and that's no sure thing.

DeSantis could see all that and that's why he didn't jump on that train.

It's possible of course. Honestly though I think the only way DeSantis has peaked is if Trump wins the nomination and the General. If Trump loses the General then DeSantis is the easy favorite for 2028 because it will have essentially proven exactly what he was saying all along, that he had the better chance of winning. He's also fundamentally a really good politician who knows how to raise money and has a lot of skins on the wall. He would likely spend the '26 cycle campaigning for others and building up an even larger army of grass roots support as he prepares for the '28 run without having to worry about running Florida at the same time.

If Trump wins it all then he just needs to find a job and rebuild. Trump will offer him something. He is unlikely to challenge for Senate in FL. Not sure what that is. Might be he decides to make some money for a few years and then get back in the game. He is only 44 and has at least 25 more years of viability.

Oh no Trump plays the politics game instead of being an unlikable principled politician like Cruz or Rand Paul who only win because of their states republican voting block majority. That doesn't make them bad politicians it just limits the office they can actually win.

DeSantis is term limited so he is done in '26 as FL Governor was my point. FL has 2 pretty popular GOP Senators so DeSantis is unlikely to challenge either and they are both on good terms with him. So the question is what he would be doing after his term is up.
