One of the craziest aspects of this negotiation revolves around AI use of actors. Basically, part of the studios' offer said that background actors could only be hired contingent upon them agreeing to do a AI scan. That scan could then replicate the actors and be used by the studios for eternity, lol.

Nobody is going to agree to that crap, Union or not.

As little sympathy as I have for modern actors, this seems like a legit issue.

And you have to remember, veeeeeery few actors make enough to even live a middle-class lifestyle. Most of them do it on the side or as a hobby.

I could really care less if most actors quit making movies and STFU for good. I have a few favorites but 99.99% of movies made lately are woke, blackwashed crap. For instance, when I finish suffering through the last episodes of season 3 just to watch Henry Cavill as the Witcher, I'm probably canceling Netflix. Can't take their BS any more. /rant

she is busy turning Lara Croft/Tomb Raider into a lesbian explorer.

I heard that Disney was going to use her to replace Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of The Carribean 6: Scissor Me Timbers.

You'd think good writers could make more money not being in a union and a good writer would not ever need to go on strike since production companies would be throwing truckloads at them. This strike tells me most writers are terrible at their jobs. I don't need to mention the horrible quality of most things that come out of Hollywood.
the problem is unions stick with unions.

yes, the studio can make movies without the unions, but members of those unions will not work with the studio in solidarity.

so use a non-union writer... actors refuse to work on project, same with directors, teamsters refuse to work in the background, etc.

the unions effectively prevent projects from moving forward.

it is a racket.

The studios often have deals they cannot and will not use non-Union writers and actors.

Most of the union members pay expensive dues for nothing to show for it really. Most actors and writers struggle except for a small number of super stars.

Sounds like the perfect opportunity for our "betters" to show us desplorables how society should work. They should pool all their money and distribute it evenly among all union members. It is not fair that Michael Moore makes so much and Joe Schmuck writer can barely scrape by. Surely Jane Fonda should want to support Tifann with an I Johnson as she works as a waitress waiting for her big break.

From Dallas Jenkins Facebook:

Important update on the Screen Actor's Guild strike, which starts tonight:

Unfortunately, despite the requested work we did on our end, an exemption for us will not be granted in time to avoid a shutdown. We will do a little filming tomorrow of everything that doesn't require our cast, and then we'll wait and hope that either the strike ends (unlikely soon), or that we're granted an exemption and can resume filming.

Yes, it's upsetting and will cost time and money…but we bring our five loaves and two fish. God handles the rest.

Dear @sagaftra ,

We've submitted all the requested paperwork immediately. We fit all qualifications for an exemption. You have our application for it. Every day that goes by without your response costs us hundreds of thousands of dollars while your actors are stuck in Utah.

We're the good guys; we've treated your actors well. Please take the few minutes to approve our application so your actors can get back to work getting paid for the last two weeks of a season they want to finish.

Wait, that's what I did even before the strike.

Fran Drescher's comment that "They are on the wrong side of history" might be a little narcissistic. It's a freaking contract dispute. All these actors barely making ends meet might need to start adulting, leave high-cost-of-living California, and get better jobs. It's called "The American Dream," not the "The American Right," for a reason. Good on you for having the gonads to give it a shot, but you can't fool the market.

People will agree to it to just get a job. Like it or not, the whole point of a union is to prevent stupid **** like this even if there is someone dumb enough to take the job.

Spoken like a true liberal, imposing his valuations on others' lives and calling those who might disagree "dumb" because they might have a different perspective. "Unions know what's best for you, dear member. Just remember that while you starve in the streets. You'll feel better, then."

Unions have been the architect of their own demise. The PATCO thing was silly. The maritime unions were corrupt as all get out.

But in this case, I can't believe the studios were offering what they did, lol. They had to have known nobody would agree to that. It wasn't even a good faith offering.

(1) Why do you get to decide whether they were negotiating in good faith? (2) Why does it matter whether they are negotiating in good faith? That they are having to negotiate with a union is of course going to change the strategy, as they are laying down precedent for the next decade (if not longer) so that union members will understand the level of commitment they need to have "the next time." Nothing wrong with that in my view.

My objection is that we have all these antitrust laws and rules, but we give unions exceptions to those laws. Be consistent. Stop picking winners and losers. How are unions not a combination or conspiracy in restraint of trade?

Now that I've thought about this a little more, I wonder if the whole AI thing is a bit of a red herring. Obviously, an A-list star would refuse to do this out of hand. If a studio wants them to star in their movie, they will not press the point. At the same time, why would they want to take the time and expense to do an AI-scan of some no-name actor? Maybe on the off chance they become famous later?
