I wonder what it does to the life expectancy of the batteries of these cars, to sit on a lot for a year or more with limited charging or activity? Can't be good.
There are 10yr old Tesla's out there will 90+%% battery life left. The Tesla's also have smart charging/discharging systems that help maintain battery life. If you look at your smart phone when it's charging, most of them will get to 90% then slow charge from there to save the battery.
The cost savings over buying gas will also add up to way more than the battery replacement over 10-15 years. Not to mention the lower maintenance cost overall (no oil changes, fewer brake pad replacements, no timing belts, way less moving parts). Obviously everyone's situation is unique and they don't work for everyone.
FTR, not pumping electric vehicles. I believe they have their place, but the insane push by federal and local governments to make everyone own one is just another level of stupid. Where is the infrastructure going to come from? Where is all this extra electricity going to come from (CA already telling owner not to charge during the daytime)? They can be a very real and difficult to contain fire hazard. Only a handful of states have implemented higher electric vehicle fees to offset the lack of gas taxes collected to pay for roads.
EDIT TO ADD: The cost of used EV's is dropping pretty fast. Tesla's seem to have dropped 10-15% in the last year alone (some b/c Tesla dropped new prices a lot last fall)..
Carvana dropped prices in Jan 2023 and sold over half their inventory in 24 hours.
