The three months of constant combat, fatigue, wounds and minimum supplies and sustenance played a huge factor in the prisoners weakened state and not being able to keep up. That's before you factor in the Japanese cruelty. Those dudes weren't just sitting around getting fat and chilling before they surrendered.

Why should they attack the headquarters of one of their best allies for the Democrats are doing a fantastic job destroying the country from within.
