I'm retired and collect some disability after 22 years active duty
Tore up back always in pain...have my own tens unit. I will not take NSAIDs The military filled me full of 800mg motrin for years to keep me in the fast moving jets as a result I have stage 3 kidney failure which will most likely only get worse.
tore up knee shoulders hearing issues neuropothy inhalation of toxic fumes neuropothy in arm etc. not whining.. would go back and do it again tomorrow

I retired in 2006 and I never l heard anyone talk about disability until my retirement outbrief. I asked the lady if I needed to out process with them because I thought I was fine despite in constant pain with back etc and she said yes

the result is above after the review of my records. my end goal was to retire and start a plumbing HVAC business, but my issues would allow me to so I had a desk job after I retired

i stay active despite pain and will continue to do so because I'm not going lay around on the couch sucking up VA meds(I won't take any) and feeling sorry for my self

The Fraud occurs because people are now being coached on how to lie to doctors and game the system..for higher ratings. For instance tinitus.10% disability. They have no way to prove you have it. All people have to do is say they have ringing in the years
I am in complete agreement something has to be stopped due to the fraud

The doctors have siad I have all the markers for PTSD. I won't claim because I assume at sometime that they will use that to confiscate guns...

There are times when guns need to be move to a friends house for Veterans struggling with suicidal ideation.

But PTSD wouldn't necessarily qualify for that. Therapy worked wonders for me. Like you I did not want a bunch of pills.

Peer Support Groups and counseling is amazing

The DAV actively lobbies against anyone trying to include veteran PTSD in red flag type laws. I have always said that tying any type of mental illness to gun control is dangerous because it will only result in people not seeking the help they need.

It should be if the client is okay with the removal of said firearm for a little while. Nothing should be mandatory.

Not sure why this is a contentious topic really.

Both can be true:
  • "Some" abuse the veterans system to gain "undue" benefits.
  • The government/taxpayer in general can/should do whatever is reasonably equitable for those permanently injured in the line of duty.

Without personalizing this at all, I think that's the case, anyway.

In years past, VA compensation was adjusted to match social security by a separate action and was not guaranteed each year. This month both Democrats and Republicans passed a new law which codifies COLA increases for our disabled veterans. Last year it was around 8% and this year about 5.8%.

So for a married vet with two kids he's set to increase from the following monthly rates..

30%
$642.05 to $679.29

50%
$1,265.82 to $1,339.24

80%
$2,292.15 to $2,424.94

100%
$4,072.12 to $4,308.30

Our government doesn't get much done together these days, but it's nice they can still come together and take care of our veterans.
What's not nice are the fraudsters,

Jury Convicts Veteran of Defrauding VA for Disability Benefits

How many checks are cashed for decades by thousands of able bodied "disabled"?
It only takes a few fraudsters to poison how it is viewed.

The Texas law was lobbied for by a veteran in a wheelchair whose wheelchair van was displaced in disabled parking by able bodied DV plate cars.
Quote:

3. I am disabled with a service-connected disability, but my disability is not included in the legal definition of a disability. Do I have to give up my current disabled veteran license plates?

No, you do not have to give up your current disabled veteran plates; however, as of January 1, 2022, you may no longer use disabled parking spaces
