When did heat index become the new actual temperature?

It was hotter with no rain statewide last year. This year we are getting rain. The hyperbole is unwarranted.

Also, this high pressure should move west to invite some more rain and cooler temps into the state next week.

meh, there's been hotter summers. Some of y'all are just forgetful or just more easily influenced by the new more red weather graphics the local media are now using.

Arent we in an El Nino pattern this year? Doesn't that help crank up the heat?

Stop watching local weather because they are just over promoting heat index.

I was 15 during the 1980 heat wave, 42 days over 100f. We worked and played outside and survived.

My advice is for everyone to sit outside in the shade during the late afternoon, eat a bowl of ice cream or watermelon and enjoy

A/C house to A/C car to A/C work/shopping.

Did not have that in the 70's..we survived and it was hot. Parents put us outside in the morning and all we had was shade and a water hose to cool off

Down here on the coast it's a typical humid day but I sat on the porch last night and watched the sunset at 84 degrees and it was very pleasant.

To the OPs comment, yes, I have noticed that the media now focuses on the heat index and we all know why - it gives them an avenue to push an agenda and be dramatic *****es.

I also remember that summer well. Sitting on the steps at Briarhood, watching the crispy grass bake in the sun while the cracks in the ground widened in front of me. But that cold beer helped cool things down a bit

All this arguing but it is clearly hotter for mid June than it's been in a very long time. Two summers in a row have been horrible. I don't think it has anything to do with climate change but drought last year and heat wave this year sucks.

This.

Texas has hot summers and water is wet. We get it (to the other posters).

But these last few weeks have been late July and August type days and miserable. This is supposed to be the high of 92/95 and not too bad being outside all day with a slight breeze type summer days.

The worst part is when this heat wave is over we will be in that mid July looking into august type heat! Haha. It sucks!

In Houston for reference.

Heat Index <> Temperature.

It's just for drama queens.

Sorta like a thread we had here last winter about the coldest weather you ever experienced. People claimed -70 at a certain place in Alaska. When you looked up lowest temp ever recorded there, it was -50. "Oh that was with the wind chill" they claimed.

It's not the same thing.

I looked back at DFW average June temps.

In the past 20 years, the average has been in the 70s just 3 times

In the 20 years before that, the average was in the 70s 7 times.

It's getting hotter on average.

Why don't you look at 500 years?

I agree the medium spins it out of control but it's still a necessary metric to look at heat exhaustion, physical exertion, and I'm sure many more applications my pre coffee brain can't think of.

Pretty sure the first time I remember hearing heat index was during HS football two a days timeframe and if it was over a certain number coach was allowed to have us outside.

Wouldn't you say the DFW area has grown tremendously since the 70s? Is it possible all of the new concrete, asphalt, and buildings have made the entire Metroplex much hotter today than 50 years ago? Just looking at temps is only half the story. It's always hotter in Fort Worth at any given time than it is in the country out West of town.

I recall those two-a-day practices in the morning where it was 90 by 8am, and by 8:15 I didn't have one square inch of dry clothing left. I had to wring the sweat out of my shirt to try to dry my hands a bit.

I watched my son play a double header last week and game time temp was 102. I pitched a canopy and the breeze made it ok. When the sun was setting it was actually nice because it was way better than 102. They had to replenish the water, but that is to be expected.

We watched the Aggies play in a Super Regional in 100 degree weather last June (or at least I did). It was hot because it was crowded in Olsen.

I play golf on weekends, usually the first tee time and in the winter, you can definitely see a temp difference in north san antonio versus downtown area. At least 3-5 degrees. That's only magnified in the summer with the concrete and surface cover.

This. People forget we have swings with El Niño and La Niña. Being this hot and humid is a great thing. Crops are going to do great. I know nobody in the panhandle is complaining. We have standing playa lakes for the first time in more than a decade.

True. Plus, the media is lazy, so they'll make sure to always point out that the temperature is above average, and "near" record highs, even if it's a few degrees short. But hey, they've got to give the Weather person their moment in the sun.

Now that being said, to those that don't like heat, it's not pleasant nor comfy to be outside during the day. I know I'm looking forward to the Temps dropping back down to where they say is normal for this time of year. The current heat is more of what I expect in August.

This is probably purely anecdotal, but I find that older people spend less time outside and are therefore bothered by it more.

I like to build furniture as a hobby, and I have a 3500 sq shop that would be way too expensive to put air conditioning in so I spend a good bit of time in there even in the summer and the heat really doesn't bother me outside right now.

I think the all time record high for Wichita Falls (117) was set on June 26, 1980. And that was part of a run of about 40 consecutive days over 100. So, we've had heat this early before. It is, however, unusual to have as much humidity as we do, I'll grant you that, but, as others have noted, that's a good thing because it means that we aren't already in a drought.
