Oceangate confirming the titan has been lost. Debris about 500 meters from bow of the Titanic

Acquaintance and fellow total solar eclipse chaser Mike Reiss took the dive in July of 2022. Explains the trip to CNN at 3m15sec mark. Where did he get the money? He wrote and produced for a little show called The Simpsons.

Last episode he produced? "Simpson Tide"

And now their vessel/crew become a permanent fixture of the Titanic underwater graveyard. Ironic.

They did send a distress message to the mothership just before implosion. Probably heard the hull cracking.
BQ..

Thanks for all the info on this...

Not doubting your story, but just an honest question.

Why not just say that they had a distress call and they heard the thing implode on Monday?

Were they just not sure?

What was the point of having all the rescue people show up when people in the industry knew the result Monday ?

Thanks!

Interesting question. I don't know the answers. Are there any human bones that can survive 25,000 psi?

It isn't just the pressure, it's the rate of increase in pressure. Imagine a fully loaded semi truck with all of its weight somehow pressed on 1 square inch of your body. Now have it do that after dropping from a 10 story building and over your whole body. .

Would the carbon fiber hull just disintegrate into a billion little pieces or would it compress into a flat piece?

He'd also been on this sub before. Everyone else who rode it said a big fat nope to returning, but this guy went back for more. Why?
Yeah, considering he'd been to the Titanic over 30 times before - and probably gone on much better vessels than the Titan. Yet he chose to keep going down again. Guess he thought it was worth the risk at 77.

Saw this from one of the articles, and these comments from the CEO seem haunting:
Quote:

'It's acrylic plexiglass,' Rush tells Estrada after being asked what the window mounted at the front of the Titan vessel is made of.

'It is seven inches thick and weighs about 80lbs. And when we go to the Titanic, it will squeeze in about three-quarters of an inch and just deforms,' he explains.

'And acrylic is great because before it cracks or fails, it starts to crackle so you get a huge warning if it's going to fail.'

Sorry. I don't want a warning of impending failure at 12,000 ft. deep. I want the warning above water. At depth it needs to fail safely.
They need to do testing to greater pressures than it will ever be expected to encounter when manned.

Want to take it to 12,500 feet? Why not test it at 15,000 feet or even lower? Make sure that there is an adequate margin of safety.

One thing that would be interesting is to take prototypes down until they crumple and then examine the damage to see how it crumpled.

Wasn't it built with titanium and carbon fiber bonded together? Back in the 1980s and 1990s when I rode bicycles 3,000 to 5,000 miles per year, there were bicycles built with carbon fiber frames and with titanium frames. The general wisdom was that if you had a carbon fiber frame and did any damage to it in an accident, even a simple nick, you needed to replace the frame to avoid catastrophic failure.

If the titanium and carbon fiber are bonded together, what would flexing of the titanium do to the carbon fiber?

And then there is the question of using off the shelf parts for the navigation and other systems.

It seems like it was designed for the best it would encounter, not the worst it would encounter.

More of a question for the CG but I guess they feel that they have to verify the hunch. Needed to verify that the sound they heard was what they suspected it was.

But Monday morning they were asking us and other companies to predict where wreckage would have fallen from 3200 meters at the location they lost contact.

The thing that pisses me off (even though it did not matter in the end) is that the Oceangate mother ship got the distress call (have no idea what they said), lost all comm and then did not notify anyone outside of Oceangate for nearly a day.

How were your predictions? Reading the wreckage was found within 500m of the titanic.

Ocean Gate continues to fail. Wonder if they were scared ****less and the "next man up" didn't know what to do. I think those 50 year old ex military dudes would have been helpful

Yeah that was definitely odd. I wonder if they knew immediately what had happened and they were in such a panic they had no idea what to do with their leader gone. Even if they thought it was just another loss of comm like on their previous missions, waiting nearly a day to contact the outside world is a strange move.

Based on the interviews, looks like he liked to surround himself with yes men (and a surfer bum just out of college).

There might not have been a coherent thought amongst them without him there to tell them what to do next.

They had to update their resumes and line up interviews before news hit. [/jk]

I'll bet it was good practice at predicting rescue/recovery plans by locating it even if they are sure about the implosion. I had no doubt and my only connection to it is engineering and materials science.

Stockton Rush's wife is the communication director for OceanGate.

Wonder what she is feeling having had to put that statement together.

Circle the wagons and get their ducks in a row before making the announcement would be my guess. I am sure that they all realized that the catastrophic loss of the sub meant the death of the company and not just its founder/CEO.

That's not exactly comparable. Look at what cavitation does to ship propellers.

Low pressure voids collapsing in on themselves cause explosive force when they collapse. Force that rips apart hardened steel in fluid power applications.
