So much has been discussed in recent years about the Titanic "disintegrating" as bacteria and other processes consume what is consumable.

Question is, once this process becomes more and more advanced, there should be incredible salvage opportunities for the stuff that did not get consumed by the ocean.

At that point, I would be all for them going down and collecting what they can, drop one more memorial plaque and be done with the place. (I mean, if people want to risk their lives going down there, so be it, but if nothing to see I think that becomes unlikely).

They won't be able to pay any bills.

I'd be shocked if the sub was anything other than the size of a beer can right now. These guys have been dead for days.
Yep, if anything, this has been a recovery mission from the start.

Since the moment they lost contact, these folks fate was sealed. I pray it happened quickly.

Aside: If I understand correctly, this titan would just be dropped into the ocean to sink to the bottom and then would need to find the titanic. I think one reporter wrote about being about 500 yards from the titanic. Speculation: which would also seem to indicate it could actually land literally on the titanic (which I understand is also a belief at this time). If so (?), I am actually surprised that those interested in actually preserving the titanic (for either viewing or salvage recovery), did not raise all kinds of hell about that possibility.

Quick research indicates federal agencies like Coast Guard, NPS, Navy, etc do not bill families for search and rescue costs.

Local and state municipalities have varying policies on recouping costs. No idea on Canada.

I would think many responding entities consider this a worthwhile exercise for the training / experience and potential publicity / chance to show off their capabilities.

And the families may have offered or agreed to offset costs for private research / tourism outfits.

Interesting thought and quite possible. At some point they had to balance landing close, too close, not close enough with only a small area being optimal.

Not worth the Memorial Plaque. I get it might be some time of tradition but who is ever going to see that thing in our lifetime? Maybe deep sea voyages will become more sophisticated in the future.

Maybe put the plaque somewhere people can see it

I believe there's a company that owns all of the salvage rights to the Titanic already.

Believe there are memorials in Newfoundland and in Belfast and I am sure several other places as well.

Reference to plaque is only related to tradition. And Ags love tradition.

Seems fitting to leave something once you have vacuumed up all the gold, silver, place settings and one blue heart shaped diamond.

My buddy texted our group chat with "30 mins of oxygen left"

I'm like dude, there's no way to be able to tell down to the minute or hour mark how my O2 is left lol

Something I picked up on in the YouTubers experience was that this sub only has enough battery life for 8 hours under water. That's why the trip is limited to 8 hours. They'd probably lose all power shortly after the 8 hour mark, and there is no telling how they drop the ballast without power.

2 hours down
4 hours on the bottom
2 hours back up

He said he only got to survey the ship for 40 minutes, as they were delayed on descent due to comms going down and dropping a ballast. And then once at the bottom, it took them a few hours to find the wreckage.

Assuming they were 2 hours since beginning their dive, and gave up to 1 hour for comms to return before aborting, they should have resurfaced about 3 hours after losing their comms.

But without any comms, does the ship have a way of knowing they resurfaced outside of sighting them?

Yep. RMS Titanic, Inc. is the company.

8 hours? WTF? What death trap.

Further confirming who owns the savage. I am sure there are other owners besides the Frenchman.

Per NY Times:
Mr. Nargeolet, 77, is the director of underwater research for RMS Titanic, Inc., an American company that owns the salvage rights to the famous wreck and displays many of the artifacts at Titanic exhibitions.

The salvage rights have already been claimed, but there is also an agreement in place between the UK and US, as the departure and destination countries, on how to manage the wreck. Taking much of anything from inside the ship itself effectively requires going to court.

Bob Ballard said the one thing he wished he had done when he found the Titanic was to claim ownership in order to keep people from as he put it, grave robbing.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

yeah, lots of talk on Reddit that a lot of the surface vessels have congregated on the surface pretty much near the titanic site... possibly indicating that something has been found.

4 hours prior they said an ROV was deployed. Maybe they did find something. I'm assuming they're not referring to the titanic debris field.

IIRC, they can only sell salvaged coal from the Titanic and have done so. You can buy coal from a gift store along with replica china and other collectibles.

Unless you put some sort of barrier around it, it is hard to stop people from doing that. People gonna people. What that does is gives you legal claim to go after them in court when they do. A few years back I saw some comparison photos of the ship when it was first discovered and photos ten years later (may have been in National Geographic). The amount of scattering created by the scavengers after its discovery was unbelievable.

What shocks me is the crew that operated this sub were seemingly okay with the repeated communications failures and didn't upgrade them. I get the CEO was a narcissist con man, but kind of surprising the crew didn't refuse to operate this thing after losing communications on so many dives. Did this not concern them that eventually the comms link may not return?

And the lights flickering on this thing as in the YouTubers video?

I'm really curious about the design of their ballast release mechanism and control. If it's anything like the level of other aspects of this craft, it wasn't engineered well. Nothing on this seems to have been well thought out.

I think the CEO fired everyone who questioned anything. He was surrounded by a bunch of people who didn't know what they were doing and/or were seemingly ok with all the problems.

Gives them time to notify families and prepare statements. I would imagine they have confirmed.

Just speculation on my part. But combined with the estimated depletion of oxygen that there will not be good news to end this story.
