I would think on an experimental machine you would want simple backups for things like the controller. For instance, is the ballast release mechanical and operable with no power? Or does it rely on a circuit that becomes inoperable due to power failure.

Complete power failure would mean no modem for comms and potential no ability to resurface. Nothing I have seen yet shows what redundancy they had or did not have in place.
The problem with that is that it requires a through hill connection to make it accessible from inside, and every through hull penetration is another point of potential weakness. I would rather see a ballast release that is held closed as long as the communications circuits are active, but automatically opens if the circuit connection is lost for longer than xx minutes.
Magnets are your friend here. Particularly with carbon fiber you could either avoid the through hull connection... or you could have the ballast secured by electrified magnets that dropped in total power loss.

The batteries would sink you.

Over 3 years in service and 25 trips. Is that true?

And it seems like they didn't learn any lessons from their other trips. Seems communication failures were common.

I think one of two things happened, the structure failed and they were crushed, or they lost all power and drifted to the bottom unable to release their ballast or resurface.

They had said the oxygen would run out about 4-5AM this morning, so that's it for them. Good chance we may never know what happened.

I think we will know

either nothing is ever found of any of the Titan and therefore it was crushed into tiny bits by the water pressure and a crack in the hull

or they do find the Titan and can determine if it was hung up on the wreckage or a fire broke out which asphyxiated them

There was some good input from the engineering types early in this thread - I'm just curious if, assuming the vehicle is still intact and at depth, over 4 days in a high pressure environment makes the carbon fiber and questionable bonding to the titanium ends even more likely to fail?

Unless the sub is sitting on the deck of Titanic, the chances of finding it are not good. Remember that there is a huge debris field surrounding the wreck, plus there is no telling how far it has drifted if it did just lose power. It may not be anywhere near it.

The CBS reporter that went last year mentioned the 27 hr thing. He was not on that trip, but hearing about it gave him comfort that everything would work out fine. Supposedly when they resurfaced, there were rough seas and they had to ride it out in the sub on the surface.

Say they do find them deep in the water now. Is it safe to swiftly bring them to the surface? Is decompression while being in the sub a concern?
Not a concern. The sub was under pressure, but the passengers are (were) breathing air which remains at sea level pressure.

I actually interviewed an expert about this yesterday for a story. They said that, if the vehicle is built correctly, the pressure wouldn't matter over something as simple as a matter of days. Oxygen would be a much bigger problem than a sudden implosion.

Why do people keep ****ting on the video game controller thing?

I promise Sony or Microsoft spent more on the ergonomic design of those things than this entire mission cost.

I agree. It was probably the only thing on the sub that actually worked.

Low hanging fruit. The number of submersible engineers truly qualified to opine on the design of the Titan is very small. Every 12 year old can tell detailed stories about the time their game controller crapped out right when they were about to break high score.

I believe it is more about the Logitech wireless controller that adds another level of possible failure rate and not having a hardwired controller. I know that every once in a while my truck refuses to connect to my phone and other times my phone refuses to connect to my outdoor stereo speaker system. In both cases I have to reboot/turn off and on something, probably not ideal when you are 2.5 miles underwater.

Uh, this thing failed and killed several people. But yeah, submersible engineers need only opine.

It seems it was a disaster waiting to happen based on all the information we have thus far.

This blows my mind. The CEO mention that he controls everything with the controller AND a touchscreen computer. Now if the controller fails, can he use the touchscreen to control the ship?

Horizon Artic has an ROV on the floor and French ROV Atalante is on the way down. Victor 6000 is on the way as well. I think they're gonna give this a legit recovery effort for a few days.

I get it, companies spent more R&D on the game controller vs Ocean Gate put into creating this sub.

I'm not a submersible engineer, but everything in there should have been redundant. Was it?

And you're right. Why not have everything wired.

Like you, I've had wireless issues with my truck and phone syncing. I've never had it fail when plugged in via USB.
