My firm was asked to work with these guys and we did not join due to their safety plan and materials in their hull. Now the Coast Guard is calling us to ask about any rescue possibilities. We got nothing at those depths.

Something like this was inevitable as going that deep into the ocean has high risks. Sooner or later one of these submersibles was going to be lost.

That said, I would love to see the Titanic with my own eyes if I could afford to do it.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

What is it that you/your firm do?

We make submersibles and autonomous ships.

Ships or other watercraft of some sort? If ships, what kind?
BQ78

More like other watercraft at this point, since it is experimental with DARPA.

We also make the dry submersibles for the SEALs.

Carbon fiber hull and unclassed vehicle was a recipe for disaster on this one. Probably why the fare was so high too.

Who would give them insurance on an unclassed vessel? Wow.

I'll take things that sound like a bad idea for $1000, Alex.

How would you have worked with them anyway?

This is akin to climbing Everest. If you die on the mountain, then you stay there.

Build the submersible for them. But the carbon fiber requirement and lack of adequate hull pressure monitoring caused us to leave.

Also, I am hearing the insurance issue was tempered by making the passengers "crew members." Everyone had to have some "training" to make them crew members before embarking.

5 people on board according to the Coast Guard.

I'm watching news on this.
They just mentioned a 'safety feature' that could come into play. But, they're not going into ANY detail about it.
How horrifying for those involved.

I would rather be launched into space than go that deep in a submarine.

I'd MUCH rather be lost in Space, than stuck in a submersible.

I read the article and from it sounds like communications have been lost but they aren't necessarily assumed gone yet, correct?

They're due back to the surface and return on June 20th so does that mean there's a chance they're all ok and just can't communicate?

I read something similar. The company offering the tours was doing a "scientific survey", and the rich people paying for a ride were "mission specialists". I figured it was all marketing BS to make it sound less like a money grab. The insurance angle makes sense too. Maybe it was a little of both.

Even if everyone comes out of this alive, I'm assuming the Coast Guard will issue some sort of cease-and-desist order.

Can they do that in international waters?

I don't think so. But as a practical matter, no insurance carrier will cover this company ever again, if the worst has happened.

If they can request help from the Coast Guard, the CG sure as hell better be able to stop it. Especially if it is a US-based operation.

I'm told this operation is out of Newfoundland but their HQ is in Everett, Washington. They developed the Titan with the U of Washington and consulted with NASA. They went with the Carbon Fiber because it is lighter and easily retrieved. Our guys think they traded ease and cost of operation for safety.

i hope they called james cameron. that guy built a submersible that went down to 30k feet? all the way down to the mariana trench.

Look, is nobody going to mention the elephant in the room? Titanic isn't done taking victims apparently. Maybe sometimes it's best to let sleeping dogs lie.

5000+ psi
< 40 degree water temp

Deep diving record is about 1000 feet.

Diver disorientation starts at around 200 feet.

Pretty sure at 1000 feet they would still be dead as they would die from the bends or their lungs would explode when they went from 1 atm to 30 atm in a short amount of time.

The deep divers do it in just a few minutes and are highly trained and know the proper exhaling procedure as your the air in your lungs expands as you go deeper.

I read an article that said this thing is designed to automatically come to the surface if there are any technical issues, but if the thing is crushed like a beer can, guessing that safety feature doesn't work.

Sounds like a great concept for an experimental autonomous craft to push the tech envelope. But not for a glorified tourist operation! Smart of you'll to not get involved in that.

5 people sharing a space that measures 22 ft x 9.2 ft x 8.3 ft for 4 days?

I think I'll pass.

Surely there were multiple automated test runs prior to tourists (er crew) boarding.

I wonder if those that were profiting from this '3 hour tour' were aboard.
