At the beach, I'm assuming the "youths" are from elsewhere. Definitely surprising compared to when I lived there.
That town/beach typically doesn't attract the urban thug types. It's way too far. Huntington Beach would be much closer, and still always feels safe when I go there.

Take the two best UFC fighters of all time. They would be no match for 40-50 HS aged males. It's silly to poke fun of these Marines for being on the ground covering their vitals.

That being said, i would have liked to hear the exchange that built up to this. Not that it excuses any violence whatsoever. But wonder if any harsh words were exchanged?

Surrounded...never outnumbered.
Fair point.

50 teenagers, but if each Marine had grabbed even 1 and slammed his head in the pavement until it exploded most of the others would have lost their nerve real quick and in San Clemente the Marines would have been no billed.
Yeah, I would have liked for that to happen, or for the Marines to break a couple of necks right off the bat.

Agreed. San Clemente always seemed more like where the middle class lived in the south OC.

Some of the attackers were shooting bottle rockets and fireworks off on the beach (illegal in CA, I should note).

One hit one of the marines in the face. He called them out.

Then the Marines left the beach and went onto the pier, where they were followed by the group and attacked.

Who knows what happened before though? You could run a story probably weekly about a Marine who got his butt whipped in a fight at a bar in Oceanside because he can't handle his alcohol and didn't know when to shut his mouth. Usually it's by another Marine and so it's a non event. I don't know if that's what happened here, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were more confrontational than their portrayal of events.

Change it to two young black men and 50 white teenagers. Would it be the black guys' fault for mouthing off?

When I joined in 1996, they were called WM's, as in Woman Marine. A few years after that, that went away and they were called Female Marines, but no FM acronym. After that, we just call them Marines. Why the adjective?

Of course, I've heard several slang, derogatory terms for them that some of them most definitely earned, in my opinion, but I digress. Same goes for male Marines, but we werent labeled with a nickname

Maybe? I'm just saying that when I hear 2 Marines got beat up and I'm just guessing alcohol was involved, my first instinct is not to jump to conclusions. I've had enough beers with Marines (and Sailors) that I don't have to stretch my imagination to see how it could have been provoked.

Exactly. I had an infantryman in my company in the Army that tried to take on a bunch of MPs coming through the Camp Casey gate guard shack piss drunk in Korea. He threw hands and went from E-5 to fuzzy pretty quick.

Yep, I heard the story. I am sure that's basically what happened. I just wonder how heated it really got building up to that. Nothing excuses it, but it's hard to believe a group of ordinary socal teens jumped a couple Marines without some sh** talking going back and forth.

No doubt men were a different breed in 1945 than they are now. However, no three Marines ever in history can fight off 40+ youts while they're back up against a pier.

They jump in the water, though, their odds change tremendously - especially against those that try to follow

Race doesn't seem to have been an issue at all here. Multiple races on both sides. Not sure why some insist on trying to make it one, except for those using the same racial lens people complain about others using.

This. I don't doubt the toughness of the Marines, but they were completely outflanked, outmaneuvered and backed into a difficult position by (checks notes)…youts. That seems embarrassing. I get that the defensive position once you have been beaten is to minimize damage, but this incident seems more like Simple Fi.

Could you imagine the outcry if the races were switched of those involved? There would be endless bloviating about how this is "systematic" of white supremacy, our greatest threat... Blah blah blah... But no- as usual it's the other way around and hardly a peep in national media about it.

Our country is freaking stupid.
