It's a slow night at work and I just read the entire 43 page thread on TigerDroppings. I'm not sure if that's something to be proud of or not but wasted some time anyways.
That's dedication. What did you learn?

Nothing groundbreaking. I guess it shouldn't surprise anyone that a few folks over there know the family. Also some posters had children on this particular booze cruise. Then there was an interesting shark v no shark debate. Someone suggested that drunk teenagers and or drunk chaperones should have hijacked the boat to help search. Luckily there were some more rational people who said that was idiotic. All it did was stress the importance of continuing to explain consequences to my children, especially my oldest who is going to Australia in a school trip the summer she graduates.
Also reinforced how lucky I (and I suspect a lot of us as well) were lucky when we were younger and some of my dumber stunts didn't have different results.

Just about every teen male does stupid, death defying sh** at some point which really scares me having 4 incl a 18 year old. Fortunately most of us lived to tell about it. But not a good look to make fun of this. There is a family out there hurting and I for one am praying for their loss and that I don't ever have to experience something like this.
not really.

Me and most of my friends were not doing death defying stupid @#$@# when we were teenagers. in fact some of my friends didn't even drink alcohol.

maybe you meant to say "today's idiot generation does stupid things"

but when we were growing up in the 1980s in Austin I don't know a single guy who did crazy death defying things. we played football and dressed up in Army fatigues and played war at night in the neighborhood.

which maybe today would be death defying.

I graduated in 1987 (yes, I'm an old). I lost two classmates when I was a sophomore when they decided to see how fast they could get to a neighboring town (one of them had a girlfriend there), and they rolled several times and were both ejected. This was before seat belt laws.

We did our share of stupid things.

Also, playing war at night could have gotten you shot, so maybe that was pretty stupid, as well.

It was a regular occasion any time we visited a lake to bet each other if we could swim across and back. There were some big lakes. That was stupid.

I think all my dumb stuff was done stone cold sober and while Working at a Boy Scout camp.
-swimming in a lake inhabitaed by gators at midnight (several times)
-diving off a slippery pool roof over 5-6 feet of concrete into a pool
-being drug behind a truck, blaring the Indiana Jones theme for a skit
-jumping from a moving truck (15mph is way faster than it looks while waiting to leave the vehicle)
-climbing a 30 foot rappelling tower with no ropes or safeties
All done sober and on a dare or to show off. Still got all my fingers and toes. But yeah, I'm a ****ing idiot and got damn lucky several times or I could have been a statistic and made everyone suffer through hours of safety classes.

I'm surprised they haven't engineered a net system under the balcony rooms.

Alcohol also seems to be a major factor in these incidents.

Yeah, I don't understand some of the takes on here but it's probably generational. Doing stupid **** as a kid and as a teenager is/was part of life for me as a 50 yr old. But I get the helicopter way of parenting and total lockdown and tracking of kids is the norm now.

We did all kinds of ridiculous, stupid crap that could have gotten us killed...none of which I condone...but it was part of life growing up.

  • BB gun wars
  • Bottlerocket wars
  • Swimming in the ocean at night drunk
  • Mudding and going up steep hills while sitting in the back of a truck hanging on for dear life

Just to name a few. All stupid, admittedly, and when my crew gets together we all marvel that we survived it all.

Yeah it's amazing I survived 17-25. I did so many things that could have killed me. Every teenage guy thinks they are invincible, it is what it is.

One of us had a crotch rocket for a short period. None of us had any experience on motorcycles. One day we just started seeing how fast we could drive it around the fly-over from Beltway 8 to 290 - we tried to make that curve at 80+. One mistake and we're over the edge flying off a 15 story tall overpass.

Or the longboarding we did in the parking garages.... Oh my Lord.

We went down 290 and some local FM roads at night taking turns riding laying on the roof of one of our friends' 67 mustang, with a hand in each open window and our toes on the little rack mounted on the trunk. I would only dare 50. One of my more idiot friends did it at 65.

We climbed up about 60 feet into a towering sycamore tree and hung some net hammocks in the limbs one summer and hung out up there one afternoon.

I could go on and on. It's what kids did. We just aren't in front of cameras 24/7, thankfully.

We did plenty of absolutely idiotic stuff, but I don't think any of us would have jumped off a moving ship at night…

Had a college friend who as we rode around at night on state highways, drinking beer in fog and he would turn the headlights off. Total darkness. Couldn't even tell where the road was unless he drove onto the right of way. The rest of us would scream like little girls until he turned them back on...then we would laugh like the idiots we were. Surprising some of us are alive to tell the story.
Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and myself founded empires; but upon what foundation did we rest the creations of our genius? Upon force! But Jesus Christ founded His upon love; and at this hour millions of men would die for Him. - Napoleon Bonaparte

We dig a set out of my grandma's garage. I believe a near skull impalememt ended out lawn dart adventures.

I had to once stop my brothers from using a little fiberglass recurve bow to shoot practice arrows almost straight up in the air, seeing how close they could land when they came back down.
one safe place
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Roman candle fights, set one of my brothers on fire twice but he wasn't badly hurt
BB gun wars
Jumping in a canal when they were pumping water and the current was terrible.
Jumping off bridges into water of uncertain depth and not knowing what might be below the surface (i was smart enough to let someone else go first)
Crossing the Trinity in a jon boat, at night, when it was almost out of its banks to hunt rabbits on the other side. At daylight we saw some of what was coming down the river we crossed
Bringing a shrimp boat across Trinity Bay during a (barely) tropical storm
Marble shooting mortar wars

Most of those I grew up with, out in the country, did similar things, not sure about city boys. I do not recall anyone dying other than one guy after our freshman year. Harry was on our track team, had run a 10.1 or 10.2 hundred (yards back then) and he and some of his buddies were walking along a canal bank and talk of swimming came up and he didn't want to. One of his buddies pushed him in and he drowned. He could run with the wind but had not learned to swim. Haven't thought about this in probably 40 years.
