But their top ten percent will be eligible to go to A&M

What the hell are they doing there when 85% of their senior class isn't eligible to graduate? Are they spending that much time at the meth lab?

"According to an audit from the district, only five out of the 33 Marlin High School seniors are eligible to graduate. The audit found that a majority of the Class of 2023 either didn't complete or failed a required course, or had too many absences.

"They're saying that I'm missing an elective class, but with that I don't understand because in 9th grade I took a typing class," senior C'ijah Williams said.

Seniors Praiyer Jones and Alondra Alvarado are among the five that the district says met graduation eligibility requirements.

"They told us that because of the students that didn't meet the requirements it wouldn't be fair for only five students to walk the stage," Alvarado said.

Senior Salvador Guerro is one of the 28 seniors who was told he is not eligible to graduate, hearing the news just days before the previously scheduled graduation.

"I get a phone call and he's like your son will not be graduating," his mother Victoria Banda said.

His family is coming in from outside the country and purchasing airline tickets just to attend his graduation.
"We have family traveling in from Mexico and if anyone knows it's not cheap," Banda said.

Guerrero learned last week that he needs to complete the STAAR test for an online US History course, but the test can't be administered until the summer.

His classmate, Williams, who was also told she did not meet requirements, is now scrambling to complete entire courses in just a handful of days.

"It's going to be really tough and it's time consuming," she said."

Good grief... Go to school. Do your assignments. Do your homework.

Such a mystery how this works.

It is. I know several coaches who took over the football program there several years back and a retired superintendent who tried to help reorganize their ISD.

That place has massive structural problems within their city and schools.

I think a lot of that is a school adminstration/counseling issue. Probably more so than anything else. They let these kids get all the way through to the end of their senior years missing classes and tests that they could have easily taken at several different times.

Marlin ISD has already had all kinds of firings/suspensions/accredidation issues the last four years. Top that with Covid and this is what you get.

Yeah, but still, you almost have to actively try to not graduate from high school.

Also strange they only had 33 seniors. That tells me they've had a lot of kids drop out. Otherwise it would be a small 2A school.

That's a bit of a jump from "They're not eligible to graduate." Lol.

I was going to guess at home, in front of a screen, but sure maybe it's the meth lab.

It's a damn shame what's happened to Marlin and Hearne over time. Could be great places, but when the kids you failed to educate in the 90s have kids that are not being educated now, it's basically a death spiral. And anyone with means gets the hell out ASAP

More likely it's the fact that they grew up in broken homes with a mom who does not give a crap about education. 70-80% of black babies are born to out of wedlock mothers. It's a hopeless cycle.

It is almost certainly a combination of both. But just in that article there are two example given of kids who got to graduation day and found out that they had missed either a class or a test that they didn't know about. That's on the administrators more than anything.

Good school districts rarely have that happen not because parents are on the ball but because the school is tracking progress.

There are several small towns in the immediate area that are significantly better. They're also 25 minutes from Waco that has a ton of public and private options
CDUB98
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'd say Waco is a bit farther than 25 miles. The Google machine shows 30, actually, but that's minor.

In reality, to get to a private school in Whacko, the drive each way is probably closer to 45 minutes door to door, and if the families who want to take advantage of it are struggling financially, they likely cannot afford that drive each day, and may not have the time/ability.

Having said that, I'm not sure how the public to public voucher system would work. I haven't looked into it as it would not apply to my situation. Would a bus be provided to pick them up still? If not, the financial burden of driving may still be there along with time.

Sounds like Marlin needs more administrators... quick raise those school taxes... get more monies from other "independent" school districts.

Nothing that a few more superintendents, principles, vice-principles, and counselors cannot fix... this time it will work.
