Just because you follow the Golden Rule, and aren't prejudiced against others in your daily life, thinking nice thoughts about people is not a shield of protection.

I wouldn't go rent a bike in South Los Angeles and expect to have a nice ride in the same way I would on a beach in San Diego.

And yes, in certain places, we are screwed. NYC is one of those places.

I'm guessing that bike rack was near her work since she was trying to ride home after work. She wasn't looking for a nice ride.
