Nightly talk shows including The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, are set to go dark starting on Tuesday after writers agreed to strike.

Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Daily Show, which had correspondent Dulc Sloan host this week, also will be hit, while such weekly shows as Saturday Night Live, Real Time with Bill Maher and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver will be similarly impacted, though final decisions on those shows are expected to come later in the week.

I haven't been this unaffected by a strike since…since…

Since the last writer's strike?

I remember when Conan and others would air old shows during that strike. F those writers. They suck, anyway.

Striking themselves into irrelevance. I love it.

Not only will they not get paid, their companies will permanently lose viewers.

Sad thing is that they might actually have a loyal viewer base that watches that crap on a regular basis. People need to get a life or maybe just go to bed and get a good nights sleep. Here's their chance to get it started

I presume that the same person writes "jokes" for Kimmel, Colbert and Meyers because their jokes are all the same.

I can help. Here's a few late night jokes for them to use:

Republicans are stupid.

Christians are stupid.

White people are racist.

Global warming deniers!

Guns!!

Trump is stupid.

Hope that helps.

Lol, they stay up because they sleep all day, and then go do a 4-9 shift at pizza place.

It's shocking to think that a show like "The Tonight Show" that to an extent undoubtedly started the late-night comedy genre could die with it's third host.

Politics have certainly alienated a solid half of their viewership with hosts/writers inability to stay neutral with their jokes. But there's more at play than just politics. Within the broader entertainment arena there are orders of magnitude more creators in the market creating ever increasing minutes of content. This isn't the days of 3-6 channels and the only way to see an up and coming comic was on Carson or to get down to the local comedy club. If you are a fan, you just don't have to stay up late anymore to watch. The next day, monologues will be on YouTube. Clips of interviews on SnapChat, TickTok, Instagram, Twitter, or any of the other platforms.

As our commutes have grown longer I think it's tougher for a lot of folks to stay up until 10:30 or even 11:30 to watch.

These folks, the hosts, the writers, the producers, just can't see the writing on the wall that their entire genre is threatened.

Years ago I followed Carson and then Leno on the Tonight Show, and Letterman. I rarely turn to watch anymore, about once a month maybe. Could be my age, but I just don't find the current shows funny or entertaining anymore.

With the writers strike, does this mean the 24/7 news channels are going mostly dark because they don't have anyone to write fake news anymore>

It's because they're not. Late night comedy isn't comedy any more. It's mean, sarcastic political rhetoric directed at Republicans sprinkled in with vapid gibberish from a bunch of generally ignorant Hollywood elites.

Libs ruin everything.

The only reason I think these shows still exist is because the networks and powers that be fund them as one more voice of political propaganda for Democrats.

Because who watches these shows? Gen X Democrats?

You observations are correct - they are not funny!

On that note Biden has been in government so long Johnny Carson made fun of him for plagiarism after a failed presidential run! In response to being caught Biden says ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country

You all are aware writers work on more shows than the late night shows? This sucks for TV in general. I guess you're all watching ESPN, an evil Disney company, so maybe don't care?

In truth comedy itself is basically dead and not just late night. Political correctness and Woke culture have destroyed it because they have made it so that Hollywood has so many topics they won't touch and all jokes have to go in one direction. That's actually the antithesis of comedy. Comedy is funny because it is making fun of norms not embracing them.

Sure you can talk about Late Night but how many truly funny movies or TV shows have been made in the last 10 years? Compare that to the 80s or 90s when you had sitcoms and comedy movies galore. One of the saddest things about Gen Z is they have been brought up in a world without humor and if they see something funny they have to treat it like they are watching porn in case the wrong person sees them watching or sharing it half the time. Hell I remember growing up in the '80s you could go to the bookstore and buy joke books specifically targeting different groups of people and half the time those people bought them and thought they were hilarious because people didn't take themselves so damn seriously.

You are aware the topic and article linked are referring specifically to late night shows?

Were you also aware that late night shows are typically written and produced within days if not hours of each other, while most of the weekly shows that people tend to rave about for multiple seasons were written/filmed often months in advance?

I guess you're just watching this board only, waiting for an opportunity for a snarky zinger that misses your intended mark.
