Wow. It is almost like "gaying it up every chance they get" wasn't the best strategy for long term success with programming aimed at families wanting wholesome entertainment for their kids. Or as Glenn Reynolds is fond of saying...get woke, go broke.
No doubt. Disney thought their main customer was the rich liberal white woman and their kids. They didn't realize that showing gay porn to these parent's kids would result in them saying "enough is enough".

Too bad their stock is not at zero.

I honestly don't think Disney mistook who their audience was. I think Disney simply believed they had enough influence over their audience to exert their liberal belief system onto the audience and eventually change the audience's belief system to align with theirs. I truly think employees like their former DEI chief convinced execs of this, and any execs who may have had doubts were likely afraid to bring them up because they were in the minority.

They didn't forget their audience includes "midwestern values" kids. They know that and intentionally target that audience to try and ingrain an extreme liberal mindset in the next generation. If they can't change your mind then they're just going to go around you and change your kid's mindset. They truly are "coming for your kids".

The Midwest has alot of liberal white women. But I get your point. Indoctrination is certainly their goal.

The backlash against Disney has been happening for a long time. Here is an article talking about Q2 2021 revenue:
GET WOKE, GO BROKE: Disney revenue PLUMMETS after woke corporate culture revealed
Quote:

The Walt Disney company revealed that revenues are down more than $636 million in the second quarter of 2021 as compared to the first.
This first wave of losses was from the group you would expect. Those that saw Disney as great entertainment for their kids, but after "wokeness", reconsidered and dumped them.

I think they are not losing those that they felt they would never lose. Kind of like Bud Light losing it's base.

No doubt, I could be wrong. But bottom line is that their assault on our kids is costing them huge dollars.

He clearly wants to spend his time campaigning and not giving depositions and being in trial. The July 24 date would take up valuable time.

Yep. This 100 percent.

These days, it only takes a handful of influential employees to browbeat the rest -- even senior management -- into running the company into the ground. They are true believers and don't care about anything else.

Disney wants it right in election season. Desantis does not. Makes sense on both sides.

This is the Federal. Pretty sure the strategy is they want the State case to go first to make the Federal case moot. Not a bad look for DeSantis at all, unless you want it to be.

My take is that the state trial needs to be resolved first before the federal trial since the resuls from the state trial could render the issues in the federal trial moot.

When I say "bad look" I mean just that. Not faulting the complications of a case during peak election season nor DeSantis wanting to avoid those complications.

And its not particularly important what fka ftc's individual perspective is (I understand it, does not impact my view of DeSantis either way), but the "bad look" refers to how general public will view it.

Disney asked for that date knowing that it would be right in the middle of a time when DeSantis would not want the fight to take the oxygen out of the room. This trial will have a lot of document discovery and depositions on both sides and those things take lots of time. Disney is not making a serious request in wanting to do it a year from now, they are just trying to poke Desantis in the eye. You would think they would know better than that by now.

What else is Disney cancelling? Cutting costs?

fka ftc
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Watched the latest video and he is taking wide latitude with his reads / takes on the project cancellations.

Not defending Disney - but I do pay close attention and go just about every year. He is fairly on point with the Lake Nonna take. I imagine Iger would want to see what he could get in California now for tax breaks on a new work campus which may not be available now in Florida. I am sure with the staff cuts that has them "reimagining" what those plans are.

But regarding EPCOT, he's a bit off-rails. The Communicore refresh is about the same scope as the original artwork though the 'pavillion" in the sky was axed, but it was axed during COVID and before the DeSantis war. Mary Poppins never made it out of concept but is widely rumored to still happen. EPCOT debuted GoG and Ratatouille in the last couple of years so not surprising. Canada is receiving a substantial refresh and I am not sure China was very far along other than concept.

Spaceship Earth is in sore need of an update considering its been like 15 years since any refresh and it remains largely the same as it was when opened 40 years ago. Everything I have seen was that it was still a go, but with COVID and park reservations they delayed to keep as many "main attractions" open at EPCOT as possible to level demand.

Disney has some definite financial challenges ahead but this guy seems to have a boner for seeing Disney fail, and it comes through in how he represents some of the issues. On the flip, a site like wdwmagic.com is biased the other direction with many pro-Disney folks / fans - so if you ever want some balance on certain projects, they are a good site to look at.

One particular item, the Reflections DVC project at Fort Wilderness is on hold / potential cancel for now and he references the Polynesian room refurb. But he fails to mention the new DVC resort tower that just topped out at the Polynesian following the completion of two other resort towers in the last few years. DVC resale prices have been in retreat and I imagine Disney will greenlight Reflections when demand picks backup.

Folks on there go Outdoor board level probing on permits, projects go / no-go, progress, etc. And they cover everything from Shades of Green pedestrian walkways to the DVC projects.

Again, not my intent to dismiss what he is saying but he definitely paints with a biased brush.

Small reminder Disney is not all bad. Pedestrian walkways aside, they still support our military.

Regardless of what you may currently think of Disney, the flyovers are a cool thing and if you are in the parks over July 4th make sure to thank a vet. I went about 25 years ago over a 4th of July with my AF veteran cousin's family. Brings back great memories of a time of Disney before woke.

Quote:

The U.S. Air Force will conduct a special military flyover of Magic Kingdom at approximately 10:30 a.m. on July 4, honoring 100 years of aerial refueling excellence.

The flyover will include one KC-135 'Stratotanker' flown by the 91st Air Refueling Squadron based at MacDill Air Force Base. It will be joined by several F-35 Lightning II stealth aircraft flown by the 33rd Fighter Wing based at Eglin Air Force Base.

The flyover is also the latest example of Disney's long history of support for the military, dating back to Disney's founders, Walt and Roy Disney, who both served their country during the First World War.

That tradition continues today with events like the daily Flag Retreat ceremony at Magic Kingdom Park, where an active-duty military member or veteran is selected from the park's daily visitors to be honored. The Walt Disney Company has also been a leading proponent of hiring, training and supporting military veterans with the Heroes Work Here initiative, the Heroes Supply Here program and Disney's Veterans Institute.

The military is working with Disney?!

Wonderful. Now the military supports grooming and turning every child into a trans. There goes the "support the troops!" Conservatives. And right before the 4th to boot.

ESPN needs to go back to airing obscure sports and sports highlights. Commentators should explain context, give useful sports insights, and love competition.

There should be a 55yo dude with a button in the corner and every time things drift to off field drama he can push it and the personalities get slimed Nickelodeon style.

We may politely scuffle on some issues, Hawg, but I did want to say thanks for running point on this Disney stuff Hawg. For some reason its really interesting to me. Maybe because I'm located so close to WDW and was a passholder for years when my son was younger (loved the actual parks experience, BTW). But I think maybe it might also be because we're getting a look real time at a global behemoth company coming to a true crossroads that may drastically change how it looks for coming generations.

Bingo. That is what is so crazy about these things large companies are doing. They have people in VP positions saying "We know this is what our market is, but we are going to completely pivot away from that and do x". And on the part of Disney, it has been even more egregious in that they have deliberately set out to give their customers programming they don't want (i.e. "gaying it up every chance we get") with the attitude of "the customer doesn't get to tell us what they want, they will take what we give them and keep watching." But they haven't. And Disney's flops are showing that.

It's been a while since I left the House of the Mouse but most of the Cast Members are pretty much like the rest of us. Not surprise the wokeness is really coming from coporate, based in Burbank and Glendale, that not all agree with. The problem is the folks that work in FL don't speak up becaue there are only a handful of other companies in the area that they would really be able to jump to. Once you get to Director level, the perks are pretty sweet that you don't want to do ANYTHING to jeopardize your position.

Theater was pretty full on Saturday in the US and that's one of the first times I have seen it so since COVID, particularly in the afternoon slot.

UK results were pretty decent and it was ahead of Warangal Forever for what it's worth.

People are discounting the fact that movie releases have changed post-COVID. People go when they want to, avoid the crowds, the lines, the additional costs of seeing it in the theater particularly when you can watch it at the house in 30 days or less.

I looked at our annual movie theater spend and invested in a redo of our media room based on that, and with 75" tvs under $500 it's likely many folks have done the same.

People don't look at Indiana Jones and think Disney, so the analysis to start is off base.

Disney is hurting, but not near as much as people want to pretend it is…
