The majority of them that was this financially illiterate are liberals. It's a big part of the reason they vote blue. They don't know any better.
financial illiteracy transcends political boundaries. this guy is especially egregious, but for every white collar dork crippled by a worthless degree and student loans there's a GED guy paying off an F-150 worth more than his annual income.

Ran into this about 30 years ago when I was shopping for a new truck. Found one I really liked and asked the salesman for the price, he went inside then came back out and told me what the payments would be. We did this same thing 2 more times. The 2nd and 3rd time I was very specific that I wanted the Sales Price not a payment. I also told him I would finance with my bank directly. Still all I got quoted was a slightly lessor payment. Unbelievable.

I turned around and walked out and flipped him the finger over my shoulder. Bought a truck somewhere else a couple of days later.

The world has gotten way more complex over the past 30 years or so, and companies have gotten much better at separating people from their money via that complexity.

There are lots of Americans who simply don't have the IQ or time preference skills to manage properly. It's one reason we are declining as a country.

Went through something similar with a sales guy. Kept making him jump through hoops and make a bunch of concessions to get my payment lowered to what I could "afford." Then I dropped the fact I was making a down payment on him that dropped me well below what I could "afford." End result was I got the total sales price I wanted while he was chasing a monthly number I had no intention of paying.

There is a lot of truth to this.

Buying on Amazon is a great microcosm of this. Not only do you need to understand the product you want to buy and what you need, you need to look at reviews to make a comparison, you need to validate the legit of the reviews, and you need to validate the legitimacy of the seller.

Email is the same way. You have to suspect everything. We have been making a lot of security changes and updates recently, including some changes to our email filtering. I got a very, very realistic looking email from a legit email security company from what looked like a legit address saying my organization had partnered with them as a new filtering service and my account needed to be set up. There were no misspellings or the normal dead giveaways anywhere. I was suspicious because I deal with the IT team a lot and we're in the same weekly update meetings, and I didn't specifically remember the name. Turns out it was a phishing email, but it was SO GOOD I almost fell for it. With internal announcements about updates and changes and that coming through from a legit looking email, I wouldn't be sucked if someone less sophisticated from Ops followed through with it.

It's getting to a point where it is incredibly difficult to distinguish between things that are legitimate and deceptive attacks.

On top of that companies have gotten really good at structuring contracts, payments, etc in deceptive or innocuous ways in order to take advantage of complacency or human heuristics. Micro transactions in games are a perfect example. Instead of selling a game, they offer micro transactions of a dollar or two here and there that quickly add up because we pay far less attention to the aggregate of smaller transactions than singular large transactions. No one really thinks twice about dropping a dollar every now and then, but it adds up.

This isn't even a financial literacy argument. It's called an auto LEASE FFS. What moron doesn't know what the word lease means?!?
Oh, trust me, I completely agree.

But you also have cases of where words have meanings that have been purposefully bent or changed to ensure advantage to one side or the other. Look at the Rent-A-Center commercials or the ones with Mr. T - "lease to own" is a pretty commonly seen phrase. I see it with houses as well at times as well.

People are stupid for the most part it seems. And stupid should hurt because historically people learn from pain. We bubble wrap too many these days though and there isn't much of a bruise from the hits anymore like there used to be, and it shows.

The trick is to get the longest loan with the highest interest which is likely matched with the lowest sales price.

Then pay it off immediately after the contract is signed.

One of my family members is an ex-con and he leases Mercedes all day every day.

I can almost hear the salesman asking what does that monthly payment need to be?

Wait until the video poster learns about negative equity.
