Professor of "History prior to 1900" wants an essay about an election in 2016? LOL

You know why we study history right?
You know rook, the class has a specific time fame to study and the prof is going off topic for his own personal, political reasons.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

My history profs were mostly liberal in 2005 as well. Write his opinion. If he sees any changes in his grade etc then report the prof.
I would not expect a favorable outcome, such as a change in unfair grading, by reporting one liberal hack to another/others. Just sayin'.

Heavens, easy to take CLEP and place out of freshman classes. I graduated in three years because I placed out of many frosh classes. Saved Dad money.

Or take community college classes for cheap during the summer before entering college.

I had a leg up because I was in AP up north that would have been recognized as college credits at Ivy League schools. I was already in that program and knew how it worked. My Dad was a great and faithful Ag but if he sent one of his kids to Harvard, Yale or Princeton, he would have been very proud.

When I told him I wanted to go to A&M and not Ivy League, he might have been even prouder.

He's been gone since the 80s. Still miss him.

He's set to graduate in 3 and a half years and in his field will likely make 6 figures right out of school. He is taking 22 hours with a 4.0 and also has an occassional weekend job working on a charter fishing boat as he is an excellent fisherman with an outstanding work ethic.
...
Of course I'm sure you and your kids are a lot more squared away at 19 though so I'd love to hear your recommendations on how I can do a better job raising him.
SO, your son has 1 semester under his belt and you are bragging about a 4.0?!

And by History pro-1900... are you talking about Hist 105, required by almost every degree?

I call BS on him taking 22 hrs in anything that gets 6 figures. Maybe if he is a SCOM major and plans to go to Law school... or maybe he works for daddy?!

Give it up... he is a Freshman, like 1 completed semester?! Major?
Technically he is an Academic Sophomore and will order his Ring next year but yes he is finishing his first full year and depending on how the next few days go he is tracking to keep his 4.0. His Major is Maritime Transportation, the highest paying Major in the State of Texas. He sure as hell isn't going to work for me and I have no family in that industry.

Is he perfect? Hell no, he's got his knucklehead moments like any kid but he does make me proud and if he keeps working as hard as he is he will have some great opportunities. He's very lucky to have found a profession he is passionate about and has the drive to work towards his goals. I'm sure he will make mistakes as well, that's part of being a human. The only reason I am "bragging" is because it was inferred my son was immature and unable to function without me and I pointed out how incorrect that is, he's one of the most self reliant kids I know for his age.

I also think it is a bizarre comment that having a strong relationship with my son where he trusts my opinions is a bad thing, in the end he gets to make his own choices but I will never apologize for supporting him and offering advice. I am glad he feels I am someone he can come to on some things to discuss.

No doubt there are always other kids who are doing better at this or that but they haven't had to overcome having a Dad like me.

Anderson is one of the worst professors in the History Dept.

He was horrible 20+ years ago and still is.

Sadly, all of the good ones have retired or passed away.

Didn't read thru all the comments but tell him to write the paper to keep his grades up and get the A. After the semester is over and the grades are recorded, have him submit the paper he really wanted to write in person.

Sometimes in the real world, you'd like to write an "opinionated" email, but it will cause more trouble than it's worth. You'll somehow find a way to get back at them in a professional manner.

I had a leftist English professor when I was at A&M who gave us an assignment to write a pro or con paper on nuclear power. After researching it, I determined that the pros outweighed the cons and wrote a pro paper. I didn't think she would agree with it but wrote it anyway. She gave an A.

Had another leftist professor at A&M who assigned a paper on pay inequality between men and women. At the time I thought it was due to sexism, however after researching it, I discovered that there were legitimate reasons for the disparity. I didn't think he'd like it but wrote it anyway. He gave me an A.

If he defends his position well he should get a good grade and, if he doesn't, he should be on firm ground to challenge the grade. I also agree with others that it appears your son is in a position grade wise where he can afford to FAFO. Why compromise his integrity?

I presented the gospel for my public speaking (Comm101) persuasive final and got an A.

A commie in my class presented on socialized medicine and got a C.

It didn't help her that she was an idiot and it didn't hurt me that I made it to regionals for persuasive speech and state in debate for UIL.

I had a raging progressive government professor who gave me an A for extolling libertarian/conservative virtues in my final essay for the course.

Not always, but I think most professors (despite their ill intentions) respect good work.

I'm a big fan of having a great relationship with your son. One of the highest compliments I ever got was one of my son's friends told me "You are the father I always wish I had."

Thanks for the additional information. You confirmed what I expected.

I don't find anything about Maritime Transporation (at A&M U Galveston) that implies 6 figures right out of college and the highest starting salary. I did find that there is a U.S. Merchant Marine Licensing Option in which you only graduate after getting Licensed. This link indicates a Ship's Captain/Pilot could expect $87,975 on average.

Not chump change, but is it expected recent graduates would be a Ship's Captain right out of college?!

Love that your son found his calling and passion in life, that it is lucrative, and he is doing well.

Best wishes to him. All I ask is if you do call his professor to complain about his grade... that by the time he graduates from college... you NEVER call his boss if he doesn't get the raise or promotion you think he should.
I never said I was going to call his Prof, not sure where you got that from.

No grad is every guaranteed a job of course but those surveys also don't reflect what a Maritime Academy Grad makes vs anyone who is a "Captain" of any boat. It's hard to track because there are so few (A&M is the only Academy on the entire Gulf Coast) but rest assured they do quite well, it's just a very niche field with a very small number of grads for a very high demand field. It's the best kept secret in the A&M System.

It's an American History Class prior to 1900. He's got a mid/high A in the class and a 4.0 overall so his grades are very important to him. Then out of the blue the Prof gives an assignment to "annotate and give opinions about". It's an Atlantic Article from 2016 after Trump's election but prior to him taking office essentially saying how Trump was going to roll back all the progress and hope of the Obama Presidency and comes just short of saying that Jim Crow is coming back. The first sentence is "The accomplishments of the first black president will be erased by a man who rose to power on the slander that Barack Obama was not born in America." and it goes downhill from there.

I am furious seeing profs give students stuff like this at the end of the Semester clearly designed to find out their political leanings on a subjectively graded paper. It puts my conservative son in a position where he can either write a paper as he truly believes or try to come up with something they want to hear. Apparently it will be graded by a 3rd Party website that uses an algorithm. My son is thinking of writing the Dean because it has no relevance to the course.

The article just rambles incoherently. I swear A&M really doesn't want any more of my donations again.

LOL, the classic "I'm a sophomore by hours" type of freshman.

Tell him to do some Aggie Bonfire and maybe he'll learn how to be a man that can fight his own battles and that sometimes you have to do things you don't like.

My middle child, school of architecture, had a prof do a "privilege assessment"

My son and another male tied for having the highest score.

Both white males, went to private schools, parents still married, stay at home Mom's, go to church, College paid for, etc.

Probably the closest I came to driving up there for an office visit. What good would that do? Hard work, sacrifices, smart decisions are considered "micro aggressions" in todays world.

My kids aren't lucky or privileged. They're the product of a lot of hard work.

Hard work that they themselves had zero part in, that's kinda the point of exercises like that.

Are they usually applied erroneously and hypocritically? Sure, but there is value in recognizing what you worked for and what was handed to you on a silver platter.

I can verify this as accurate. My dad had to go to summer school to even get into A&M, was a C-student, but went to the Maritime Academy, did great, and literally when he and the rest of his class walked out of their graduation ceremony, there were recruiters there from all the big oil companies just waiting to offer jobs.

He did 20 years on an oil tanker, going up the mate chart to become a captain, made a ton of money, got a ton of stock, and retired from that job at age 42 with a pension. He worked 8 more years at land-based jobs and retired at age 50. It was hard, hard work for 20 years, months away from home, but financially rewarding to the extreme.
