This one is the 'best' high school in HISD. It's on the opposite end of the street from River Oaks Country Club (although, I'm pretty sure that no members' kids go there).

They have (or at least 15 years ago had) a highly regarded IB program and a lot of elite private middle school kids that didn't get into the elite high schools or who's parents didn't want to pay 30k a year went to Lamar. Seems like a few years ago there was a campus stabbing or shooting.

I graduated from Lamar a looong time ago. Basically, Lamar was like the Highland Park HS of Houston until the mid 70's due to its location between West U, the Rice Village and River Oaks. Then they implemented bussing and the school basically became two campuses in one. The bussed in ghetto kids in remedial to average classes on one side and the children of mostly liberal West U/Rice Village yuppies in advanced classes on the other. The only common ground was home room and PE. Nearly all of the River Oaks crowd left altogether at that point, and there was a small population of more blue collar whites from the Heights area (from which most of my friends came). Even after the later creation of the whole IB program and major campus remodeling, I vowed that I would never send my kids there. My much celebrated chemistry teacher turned out years later to be a gay Walter White and ended up ODing from his own drugs after being fired from Awty.

You might be a bit older than me but my mom graduated from there in '56 w/former Houston mayor Fred Hofheinz. Back then, there were 2 country clubs on River Oaks Blvd., ROCC & Lamar High School.

Interestingly enough, Hispanic is the leader in ethnic breakdown with Black & White at equal measures.

They need to bring back the ability to swat these kids. It's old school, but damn those hurt back in the day.

I am to the point with the onset of online education/technology that these "kids" who act violently or disrespectfully to teachers/other students need to be permanently removed from the public education system

They can take their classes online if they want..


There are too many good kids that get overshadowed by these punks.

Yep, and I started at Lamar about 4 years after the bussing started, so I completely missed the glory days of Lamar. I also got to witness the beginning of the end for rival Lee High School, which is now majority ESL kids and has NONE of the original demographic that it had when it opened. Even our other big rival, Bellaire HS, isn't what it used to be. It was the last of the three to start sliding. With the exception of a few good elementary schools, HISD is a hollowed out shell now.

Klein Forest has to be where most of this is from...

I'd like to see an assault on an educator be punished by a 1st degree felony and make it mandatory to be tried as an adult from 14 on up.

Let teachers defend themselves and let students know that they're free to help defend them, too, sans punishment.

In my HS days (mid to late 80s), we'd have put some ****stick attacking a teacher in the hospital, if the teacher didn't do it themselves.

Coddling kids has turned the system upside down. Sometimes, a good ass whooping is what the doctor ordered.
