A number of years ago, there was a family living near me that had been good friends of my older brother when he was a pilot in Alaska. One night when my brother was visiting, he called them up to invite them to supper. The husband was in Saudi Arabia working on a contract, but the wife and their younger daughter met us for supper at some restaurant in Pasadena.
At the supper, she told us about the preacher at their church and her older daughter. Her and her husband had sent the older daughter to the preacher for weekly counseling beginning when she was about 14 or 15. What she didn't know was that the preacher raped the daughter every time she came in for counseling. The daughter wanted to stop the counseling, but the parents, not knowing what was going on, insisted on it continuing.
This went on until the daughter was about ready to go to college. The mother accidentally picked up the telephone one day to make a call and heard the preacher telling the daughter how much he loved her and how she couldn't go away to college.
She confronted her daughter and that is when the mother found about about the preacher raping their daughter weekly for several years. Suddenly it made sense why the daughter tried so hard to get out of the counseling sessions.
She took it to the church (I don't know why she didn't contact the police) and the church had a meeting of its members to discuss the issue. One thing they found out was that the preacher had been kicked out of his previous congregation for the same thing and the previous congregation didn't have the decency to warn his new congregation about him. Her fellow church members voted to keep the damned preacher.
The supper was just a few days after that vote. She said that she would be leaving the church. She also said that she would never tell her husband about it because she knew that he would kill the preacher. To explain switching churches, she said she would tell him that she found a church she liked better and not divulge the actual reason.
Once he returned, I think it was quite likely that he would see one or more of the other members of that church and would find out. The next time I saw her husband was about a year later. I wondered if he ever found out about it but wasn't about to ask. The husband passed away a bit more than three years ago, but the wife is apparently still alive.
