There was definitely an earthquake in Turkey, but because the news business killed itself off, we have few news bureaus or trusted sources and now just mostly Twitter links that we don't know if they are true or not.

I trust this one as real. I guess we will find out the full extent of damage overnight and the Twitter trolls will be outed.

I grew up in California, and even in a rich, industrialized country where earthquakes are common and planned for, like the U.S. West Coast or Japan, a 7.8 is big. Very big.

The Loma Prieta quake (the 1989 World Series earthquake, for those that remember) was a 6.9. The Northridge quake in 1994 was 6.7.

Since the Richter Scale is logarithmic (each whole number increase on the scale is 10x increase in magnitude), this quake is about 9x as powerful as Loma Prieta.

Even somewhere like California or Japan, with long established and well enforced building codes, the effects would be brutal. In a less wealthy country like Turkey, a big quake like that will be devastating.

Epicenter was southern Turkey but real close to the border with Syria where many towns were also hit. Hundreds dead on both sides of the border. Syria is already in a major population upheaval with their civil war and it looks like the quake hit both sides areas badly. I wouldn't be surprised if casualties end up being worse in Syria as their infrastructure, emergency care, and SAR capabilities are far less than Turkeys.

Turkey is in a very active earthquake zone. Events go back to biblical times. A more recent big one was 1944.

I'm sure the regime over there will use this "opportunity" to add to their authoritarian sharia flavored oppression of the people. This is a disaster for the people in two ways, not just the obvious immediate destruction.

the videos and thoughts of massive earthquakes in poorly developed countries is just overwhelming to me...

the magnitude of human loss and suffering
where do you even start with SAR?
how do you remove and dispose of all that ruble?
even if money was available to help...do you send it to that region, knowing it would/could get into the wrong hands.
earthquakes ,probably more than any other natural disaster, get "the end of the world is near" vibes

Hope all of our USAF Airmen are ok at Incirlik Air Base over there (can't remember if families are there or not, I know a couple of years ago they were moved outta Turkey for awhile)

Looking at where the all of the quakes have occurred, easy to see exactly where and how much of the fault ruptured. Looks like it was the same fault which caused the 1138 Aleppo Earthquake which is believed to have killed around 230,000.
