I've also gotten into the habit of taking a picture of my signed bill and hold onto it until after the charge posts. And I do that especially when traveling.

Going to a coffee shop used to be out little treat on the weekend, something to get out of the house but cheaper than a restaurant. But now with prices and the gratuity, can't justify getting coffee and a pastry for $30. We were holding out for a while and paying these costs, and noticed coffee shops and restaurants still had the same traffic as pre-inflation. I wonder how many families are like ours will and finally decide to stop and we see this industry begin to suffer.

There's at least 5 new coffee shops opening up in our little growing town. It seems like they're all staying full. A few of them are just drive-through only.

The absolute worst is that most of your major stadiums are cashless now. I guess they were having too many employees scraping cash from the drawer each event. So now, you go a water, insert your card, and it asks you for a freaking tip...

They should have a threshold for certain things that tells the system - no tip, too easy.

Some will go the distance to earn their tip...

"Uber Eats delivery man stops college basketball game after walking on court to find customer

As far as we know, the delivery man is still searching for the person who ordered McDonald's..."

If you think I am a liberal, you are incorrect. Assume sarcasm on my part. Sorry if something I post has already been posted. Just the way it is!!

You can either tip or pay the waitstaff's wages through a higher meal cost. Either way, you're footing the labor bill.
Conspiracies are the norm, not the exception.

Don't really understand the getting angry about it being there. Just do what you want.

I usually tip $1 if the people are hustling hard. That $1 to the ladies working hard selling breakfast tacos is well spent.

Now, if I get the fake "so how's your day going?" right at signing time, wish I could take money from them. And they're usually the ones dragging arse.

Another trend is the suggested tip amount of 15%, 18%, etc. are including sales tax, take out fees, and credit card surcharges.

In Austin, I've seen the tipping percentage start at 18%, then 20%, then 25% on the IPad screens.

I ate at a place in Portland a few months ago where the suggested tip amounts were 20%, 25% and 30%. I tipped my usual 15%.

I don't tip unless full sit down service or delivery(which I never do). So I could care less if your gen z child gets mad that they are entitled to my cash

Also, this is more corporate and business owners greed, trying to offload paying their employees onto customers

I'll tip for full service. You begin at 15% and go up or down from there. It's not often that the tip goes up as wait service has become awful; condiments on the table not full, little or no sugar/salt/pepper on the table, not getting the order right, poor food presentation, infrequent checking on guest, etc. I used to wait tables back in the day and was trained very well by a restaurant owner who also used to wait tables. He told me to run my section of tables as of it were my restaurant and that mindset has followed me into my professional career.

I usually tip 30% at restaurants. For some things like a haircut, I'll tip 100%.

I also usually try to tip in cash.

I refuse to tip for carry out or counter service food.

When I do tip:
Waiters at restaurants, of course...usually closer to 20%
Haircuts
Valet parking
Full service car wash

I've been more generous in my tips the past year since I know inflation is much more stressful for lower income workers than it is for me, and I appreciate the fact they are working

This is what I do.

I'm not sure what this looks like anymore but food servers made less than min wage back in the day which is why tipping was normal there. You made all your money on the tips. I'm not tipping a barista on top of their salary that is likely double or more min wage.

As a former waiter, I have a soft spot for that job so I tip 20% by default.

I used to wait tables back in the day and agree. One of the biggest things I notice with service today is that waiters seem incapable of multitasking. They hit one table and go back and forth rather than work efficiently and check a section before going to the back/register. Zero critical thinking or problem solving skills.

You always have to turn everything in to some whine fest about capitalism and business owners don't you? Lord, take a deep breath and dial back your grievance obsession.

Tipping has always been an American thing in certain sectors of the economy, nothing wrong with that. It is in fact how workers who went above and beyond in great customer service were able to enhance their pay. Nothing fairer than that. It's why so many states allowed for really low base hourly pay for servers.

This whole problem actually started out of consumer kindness, not corporate or business owner greed, when COVID hit. Restaurants that had to move to take out only had their revenues decimated. People like me and my wife were tipping big time because we genuinely cared about business owners and their employees and genuinely wanted them to weather the storm and stay in business. Big tipping was about the only way we could help them do that.

That sentiment spread across the country rapidly in 2020 but unfortunately turned in to an obnoxious system of tips being expected for the most basic of services that don't require any real skill or support of the line employee. That's what has people irritated. And what you may consider to be corporate or business owner greed is in actuality an attempt for said business to keep the doors open.

So you mean to tell me it's not greed, when a business owner decided to pay a waiter 2.50/hr and then expects the customer to cover the difference for the waiters salary? The entire premise of tipping is because cheap ass owners wont pay employees a steady wage. That's why we are now seeing tip % increasing
Urban Ag

BS

It's always been this way.

Servers that hustle and actually have some people skills can make great money on tips. And do. That's how the game works.

If you are so offended with the ability for a restaurant to pay $2.50/hour + tips, take it up with your state legislator.

This got worse due to Covid. Wait staff were positioned as risking a great deal to serve you so they needed to be compensated with an increased tip. Or because so many quit during that time period the ones that were left were working extra hard and you must essentially accept the wait times and poor service and tip double for it. And of course that tipping became expected after the Covid hysteria subsided.

There are also the typical facebook neighborhood pages where people shame others for having the temerity to complain about bad service or shame people into tipping extra.

I'm a reverse racist when I tip. Sweet Hispanic lady that's working her azz off waiting half of the tables in a restaurant by herself? Back up the truck.

Pathetic, white, 25 year old loser at Starbucks with a ring in zir nose and a bad disposition? Lol.

If that is true, then why is paying less than minimum wage legal and codified?
Minimum Wages for Tipped Employees

Just go flat minimum wage instead.
Yeah, there is some math about getting them to minimum, but come on.

Suggested tips starting at 18% at full service restaurants irritates me enough much less counter service. 15% is fine for standard service, for 20% it better be exceptional

I also tip significantly higher % at inexpensive places vs nice places. It's not any more work to drop off a $70 steak than an $8.99 Enchilada special
Yeah. 15% is plenty. These days some people seem to take 15% as an insult.

One thing that is interesting to me is that I used to know people who grew up in the 1930s who could rarely bring themselves to tip more than a quarter and never more than a dollar. Not per person, but for an entire group.
Is that you, Judge Smails?

So the counter argument that no one should tip in states where workers have demanded, and received, a liveable wage? I'm down with that, I shouldn't have tipped at all in CA.

Look at aTm and Aggieland now.
That place looks like a newly minted Dallas suburb now.
Leaving that place for a job that does not have a newly minted office would be a let down.
