Watch it. All of the seasons.
Again, not helpful.

Why buy burner phones online and why is that even legal?

Why should being anonymous be illegal?

Why would it be illegal?

Its essentially the modern version of a pay phone.
Pay phones were actually traceable back in the day. Connecting that to a person was the challenge before surveillance video.

LOL.

Just want to understand why a Doctoral student n Criminology refused to use a burner phone. My last understanding was that they were abundant and easily obtained with cash from a variety of sources.

They are traceable but not to the user.

Realistically why would he need a burner phone? It's not like he needed a second number to give out. Even if he did have a special murder phone, once he logged in to any data portion of his special murder phone (which is likely why he kept his real phone on him to begin with), big tech would have a bead on him.

So I thought even burner phones required some type of email verification to turn on? How does that work? You would need to give the email to turn it on no? My buddy owned a phone store and said most phones require emails to turn on..

I would hope burner phones would always be legal, there is no reason for them not to be.

Get another email account and use it only for the activation of the phone. (Don't use some variation of your actual name in the new email account!)

Nothing has been helpful so far.

Make sure you cover your exposed skin with Vaseline so it will catch any gun powder residue that you can shower off with hot water. Burn all your clothes.

At 7/11 with cash.

If you order online there's a paper trail.
What I thought. If burner phones are that easily accessible, why would anyone order them online?
Most people probably aren't using them for nefarious purposes. I bought one for use in Alaska because I travel there frequently and there is a carrier there that works much better in remote Alaska than any of the major carriers do. I bought it at a GCI (cell provider) store and gave all my real info. I don't need to hide my usage.

nope. only if you want to create an account to add money to extend service at a later time, or to use with google to download apps (if you want to do that)/.

but even them... so many options for free/untraceable email accounts as well.

that can be used with VPNs, or your local library computer or....
I thought about the library as well, but they might have cameras inside. I'd sit inside inside a car right outside a place with free internet. At one of my properties we broadcast right at 600 feet and though we have security cameras you could easily stay out of view of them and still access the internet.

Come to think of it, planning a crime is hard work. Cell towers, burner phones, burner laptops, turning off the phone, DNA, cameras everywhere. Think I will just stick to my non-criminal life as is!

as he was a first semester student, maybe they had not yet gotten to the chapters about digital evidence and tracking.

maybe that was a 201 course and not a 101 course.

that, and people are stupid and do not realize (or care) how much your car, your phone, your smart watch really collect and snitch on you.

You also need to go a little farther than you outlined.

You need to age the phone to make sure you don't end up on security cameras at stores you get them. There are other things like turning them off (and even removing the battery) when you're anywhere near locations you frequent.

Use your personal credit card and have it delivered to your home. Impossible to trace.

I believe at one time, prepaid phones did provide a fairly anonymous form of communication. However, even without smartphone location services I think the cell tower can now estimate your location based on which antenna and signal strength. This obviously all goes into a database. A good query and cross-reference is just a geofence warrant away.

If you truly want to get away with murder, this evil dude was actually pretty close.

Mistake #1 - had electronics with him. By doing it at 4am he could have left all his electronics at his home - and that doesn't look suspicious to anyone because it's sleep time.

Mistake #2, his DNA on the sheath left behind. I don't believe they have said they found any other dna of his at the scene. This was the big one.

Mistake #3, getting his car on camera around the scene. He should have either walked, or biked half way, or done something else to keep his car off of the cameras that are pretty much everywhere now days. Regardless of his pick in transportation - he definitely should have walked in and walked out the last miles through the woods or some other area he prescreened for cameras.

Scary to me how close this guy seems to have got to getting away with cold blooded murder x4.

Especially since it was Saturday night after a home football game and the residence is across the street from campus. Lots of people would be walking around, even late at night. As long as he wasn't carrying a beer, that is.

I also wonder if they will find evidence that was watching the twitch feed from the Grub Truck that night?

Some have a removable battery. Only install when using the phone then remove after powering off the phone then hold the power buttons to cycle any remaining energy. Not that I'm paranoid.

LOL. Hardly. I live in a rual area but there is a cell phone tower about 1500 feet away, on a neighbor's land. Not hard to find where my phone is. A burner wouldn't do me much good for getting lost in the clutter.

Put it in a case like this and you can be offline while powered on.

You vastly overestimate my interest in evading any detection of my cell phone location. More often than not I forget my cell phone at home anyway.

I just couldn't understand how buying one online would work and still be a true burner.

My luck, I would put it in a case that kills transmissions right before I lose it and need "Find my Phone".

Being of a certain age, my keys are more often in my hands than a cell phone. More attached to those because back in the day losing your keys was a big deal. Not having my phone on me is not something I even think about at all.
