Does this mean his retired pope condo residence is vacant now so pope marx can slide on over? Is there any reason for optimism the college of cardinals won't just elect another marxist this time?

If you haven't seen Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict, it's worth a watch.

That soiled mindset has infected a lot of protestant denominations and appears to have also infected the Vatican. I am not Catholic, but I am concerned future popes will be more like the current one and less like Benedict.

Like my opinion matters, I thought he was a good Pope given the world's issues, but could have been tougher regarding the child abuse problems in the church.

Maybe the politics of the church and really seeing how things worked behind the curtain made him decide to retire.

So Hitler youth and massive pedo sex coverup, but other than that, a fairly pious and good dude.

I hope so. Pope Francis, although I believe in his heart he's a good man, has completely gone down the wrong path in many ways. Time for a new Pope And I'm not even Catholic.

Not at all. No offense taken. I am not Catholic so I I don't get to vote for Pope. I thought he was a better Pope than the current one, but if there was room for improvement, that was what I was talking about. Allegedly some of the things he did regarding the sexual abuse upset some folks in the Vatican because it broke up some power centers. From the outside looking in, the RCC could probably stand more of that

Hitler youth wasn't optional for many Germans

Hope for a Church that returns to what I consider the true path lies in Africa and Asia. The cultural bankruptcy of the West has not undermined the Church there.

Compulsory for boys 14 and over after 1939 if I recall correctly.

Mostly agree with this but I think the resurgence of traditionalism in the US will have a large part to play as well.

Interesting how after JPII they went with an old pope to shorten his tenure, yet he would have served nearly 20 years had he not stepped down.

He was forced out so that the enclave libs could get their Marxist.

In defense of protestants, the majority of people in this country who claim to be Catholic also often don't know what they are talking about.

Point me to where Benedict led the resistance and then this will be a valid comparison....

Sigh. Joining the Hitler Youth was compulsory. Benny avoided going to meetings as much as he could get away with it where as the Scholl's were initially drawn to the Nazi Party when young. Keep in mind both Scholl's were significantly older than Benny. Awfully difficult to expect a teenager to form a resistance group when few adults in Germany were brave enough to actively resist.

He was conscripted into the Hitler Youth at 14.

If you have an example of him promoting the ideals of National Socialism, let's hear it. Otherwise it reminds me of the lack of understanding of history demonstrated by liberals tearing down confederate statues. If you'd been a fighting age white male in the south during the civil war, you almost certainly would have fought for the south. If you'd been a 14 year old non Jewish white male in Nazi Germany during WWII, you almost certainly would have been in the Hitler Youth.

Not unless you think God is looking for someone who knows how to turn a buck. The current Pope's immediate predecessors were from Germany, Poland, and Italy, which were probably more socialist than current day Argentina.

Are there any capitalistic bishops here in the US the rest of the cardinals can get behind?

I'll get in trouble for speculating with the thought police on this thread but I am going to go out on a limb and say Vigano is unlikely to be elected (I think he's 'just' an archbishop anyway).

I think less than 10 percent of the cardinals left were chosen by JP2. Unless someone can provide some other informed/reasoned speculation, I'm gonna say it is highly unlikely the next pope is any less marxist than the current one. Maybe they will let the CCP pick a nominee.

A lot of people want to speculate that it had to do with the pedo stuff, but that really pre-dated Benedict and he had little to do with how that was handled. Personally, I think he was forced out because he was at odds about how to deal with the Vatican banking scandal that was going on at the time.

It's F16 and pretty par for course regarding the RCC.
