Benedict XVIPriest, Prefect, Pope, Rest In Peace
by Edward Pentin & Joan Frawley Desmond - National Catholic Register
Quote:

VATICAN CITY Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has died at the age of 95.

The Vatican made the announcement of his death at 10.30 am Rome time on Dec. 31 in a short statement translated into several languages.

"With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican," Vatican press office director Matteo Bruni said. "Further information will be provided as soon as possible."

The Vatican added that from Jan. 2, the body of the Pope Emeritus will rest in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican "for the faithful to bid farewell." Bruni later added that Benedict XVI's funeral will be celebrated by Pope Francis on Thursday, Jan. 5, in St Peter's Square and disclosed that the Pope Emeritus received last rites on Wednesday afternoon after the Holy Mass.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

No, this was the one in the Hitler youth. First one (I think) that ever abdicated the role

in 600 years. There were 11 popes that went through papal renunciation
Last one before Benedict was Gregory XII July 1415

Interesting how after JPII they went with an old pope to shorten his tenure, yet he would have served nearly 20 years had he not stepped down.

I'd venture that stepping down likely extended his life by 5 years.

Let's pray that the RCC selects a Pope that adheres to the Gospel and the Letters from Paul to the Churches. As a Protestant, this is my prayer.

May the Lord have mercy on Benedict's Soul, as we pray that he has mercy on us.

We still have a Pope, Benedict XVI abdicated in 2013.

Why should the Pope care about extending his life as long as possible? Isn't he here to serve as Christ on Earth? Seems like he'd serve in that role until he dies. Or was he afraid of what lay ahead for him? Hard to say but I'd like for someone to tell me why I have to go to confession to have a man forgive my sins vs going straight to God? If someone can quote me the scripture associated with confession I'd appreciate it.

I wouldn't worry. The only people who would even care about the difference already knew the difference and recognized the mistake.

It's literally Latin to the rest of us.

"Whose sins you forgive are forgiven, whose sins you retain are retained."

How would this literal power to absolve peoples' sins work if people didn't confess their sins in the first place? But only God forgives sins!, you're quick to say. You're right. That's what Catholics believe, too.

It's amazing how long he lived after stepping down.

I kind of thought he was in bad health at that time but I don't think he really was.

RIP.

Not a fan of Popes in general...... but there were hundreds of thousands of Hitler youth. The indoctrination originated in public education. I don't think that Jozef Ratzinger was running a concentration camp or anything... being in Hitler youth was 'normal' for young men at that time.

I think him stepping down was a result of pressure from the Roman Curia within the College of Cardinals in response to the global sex abuse scandal(s).

My brother knew a woman who was born in Germany in the 1930s. She married a US serviceman in the 1950s and became American. She was in the Hitler Youth, and said everyone else was too because you pretty much didn't have a choice.

People like Dietrich Bonhoeffer were pretty rare in Germany back then.
