Was quite arguably the biggest quantum liberal jump in US history. But he was a Texas boy in the hill country and it was the early 60s. What gives?

He may have hailed from the hill country, but was truly a creature of the swamp.

Because Texas used to be blue for the majority of its existence? Texas being Republican is still fairly new. Some of the posters here remember. Flipped in the early 80's I believe.

California used to be pretty damn red in that same time frame.

Among other things, government programs such as rural electrification demonstrably made life for rural residents of the Hill Country better. Plus he was worried about his legacy.

LBJ wasn't really liberal, he just knew how to harness the power of the downtrodden . He said it himself . It was damned reprehensible but it worked.

He was quite possibly the most power hungry and corrupt person to ever hold the Presidency. So it makes sense that he gravitated to the party of increasing the size and scope of government.

He seemed to be a complex man. I don't know that there's ever been a politician so absorbed and focused on politics. Like his policies or not, he certainly was great at politics!

True. Most people don't understand how Reconstruction also affected Texas state politics. There was the conservative wing of the Dem Party, There was the moderate wing of the Dem Party and then there was the liberal wing of the Dem Party. They battled amongst themselves during the state elections then fell in line with what DC leadership wanted them to do.

Took the south Texas Parr model national, the more people dependent on you or your policies the more power you amass.

I grew up in the same town as LBJ (a few decades apart). I knew people who knew him. He would do anything for power. Left and right were just abstractions to him.

Warren G Harding and LBJ in the same cabinet would have been quite the duo.

He went to DC a poor man. He left with the equivalent of $200mm.

He was a prototypical Democrat.

Don't know how long you have lived in Texas but the state was blue until the early 80s.

The premise of the question is wrong. I would argue that Woodrow Wilson's administration was the biggest quantum liberal jump in US history, followed by Franklin Roosevelt, with LBJ being a close third.

Woodrow Wilson got us involved in World War I, imprisoned people who oppose that involvement including newspaper editors, introduced the first national income tax, and also introduced federal agencies with policy making authority.

Yep and look how many millions of black Americans have missed out on the American dream AND/OR died as a result……all for a vote. That POS drew up the blueprints for each generation of Democrats to follow ever since. Dress it up however you want but it's all for power and corruption, now more than ever. Pathetic turn of events for the once greatest country in the world.

He was a typical racist Democrat that knew hooking blacks on gov would keep them on sidelines of capitalism. He posed as the blacks benefactor on camera and was dropping n bombs off. Like modern day Hillary going on breakfast club to pander about hot sauce in her purse, or Biden going to black church for photo op.

They either think blacks are inferior and in need of government, or they want to politically enslave them for votes.... its racist either way.

Malcom was on to LBJ and the like...

The refusal to believe that paternalistic racism is a thing and a thing that goes back to slavery days, just amazes me.

Claiming minorities can't manage to get a voter ID because they are that deficient?

Funny how most Democrats fall into this mode. Maybe he was the genesis of the obscene todays obscene Dem. At least the media back then reported the stories, albeit left leaning, they did report the stories.
Hate is how progressives sustain themselves. Without hate, introspection begins to slip into the progressive's consciousness, threatening the progressive with the truth: that their ideas and opinions are illogical, hypocritical, dangerous, and asinine.
This is backed by data.

The great dichotomy to LBJ was Sam Rayburn. Rayburn was the longest serving House Speaker in history and you could argue that from 1957-61 when Rayburn was Speaker and LBJ was Majority Leader that Texas had more power than at any time in US history.

Rayburn was everything that LBJ wasn't though. A true servant of the people who never married, never lived extravagantly or accumulated wealth, and died with a small piece of land and a few dollars i the bank. Here was a man that was immensely powerful throughout the New Deal era and was the protege of Garner (Speaker and FDR's VP) and then led the Dem Party in the House from '40-61 throughout WWII and the aftermath and died in office, all but 4 of those years as Speaker. Yet he wanted nothing for himself.

LBJ was a power mad and corrupt politician who did immense damage to this nation.

The most contempt for anyone I ever heard from my dad was for FDR.
NO AMNESTY!

in order for democrats, liberals, progressives et al to continue their illogical belief systems they have to pretend not to know a lot of things; by pretending "not to know" there is no guilt, no actual connection to conscience. Denial of truth allows easier trespass.

LBJ absolutely ****ed up in the 1960s concerning black America because he was too much of a ***** to do the right thing.
