He was quite possibly the most power hungry and corrupt person to ever hold the Presidency. So it makes sense that he gravitated to the party of increasing the size and scope of government.

He doesn't hold a candle to Obama. At least LBJ would give you something for what he got. Plus, when it appeared he wasn't going to get the nomination or win reelection in 1968, he stepped down instead of trying to steal the office. Obama never would have done that.

I'm not saying he was a choir boy. He wasn't above playing dirty -- really dirty. And he was also pretty reprehensible, both in actions and what he ended up doing to this country. He was certainly interested in enriching himself at whatever means necessary. But nowhere near to the extent of recent democrat office holders.

LBJ was the quintessential politician. He gained power by knowing every bodies dirty little secrets which made him about as powerful as J. Edger Hoover and probably the most hated.

Even members of his family hated him.

He stole his Senate seat in 1948. Ask the folks in South Texas about Box 13.

And when a department of agriculture worker in Robertson county named Henry Marshall was close to blowing the whistle on LBJ and Billy Sol Estes enriching themselves, he ended up dead. Shot five times and still ruled a suicide for twenty plus years.

I'm no fan of Obama, but LBJ was an AWFUL human.

I still have suspicions he or his circle was involved in killing JFK. Not only was he a scoundrel, he hung around with a lot of other criminals.

There was a book I read, I can't find it or remember the name and think it has been wiped off the earth somehow. Told stories of LBJ tying up deer so his buds can shoot him and he told his private pilot he better get his ass to the ranch in a storm or else, and pilot crashed a died . Lady Bird was from up in Karnack and of course somehow a munitions Depot buys up land there for Longhorn Depot. Made no sense- off the routes etc. one crooked SOB.

LBJ's time in the White House is rightfully infamous but his time in the US Senate was infinitely more impactful. He was able to take control of the most powerful deliberative body in the world by bending, breaking, and leveraging rules and traditions in ways that no one else thought were possible.

His policies were undoubtedly destructive to this country but his quest for power was incredible.

Box 13, where they found 201 ballots and all but one were for LBJ.

His opponent for the US Senate (dem primary) was the sitting Texas Governor, Coke Stevenson

Are you thinking of "The Life and Times of LBJ"?

I think that was the name of the book from late 70's, early 80's. I can't find it either. We had to read it for HS history. The quotes sound very familiar.

I've always been puzzled by that period in Texas politics. Our 2 senators were LBJ and Ralph Yarborough. The later was even more left wing than LBJ. And we voted for Hubert Humphrey in '68!

The airline story is true.

It's also true that his hitman Mac Wallace got off on a 5 year suspended sentence after he was found guilty of murdering an Austin area golf pro.

Billy Sol Estes has even claimed that LBJ was behind the murder of his own sister Josefa…didnt like some of her public sexual exploits while he was trying to claw out a political career.

My maternal grandfather was on the Jim Wells Democratic executive committee and a founding member of the Jim Wells "Freedom Party" and saw the ballots, was forced at gunpoint out of the Box 13 polling place. He is in all the books and up until probably the late 80's was hounded several times a year for interviews and such. Robert Caro sat outside of my grandparents house for the better part of 2 days wanting to interview him for the books he wrote, my grandfather refused.

Prior to, during, and after the Box 13 deal there were several murders and disappearances related to it and there were many, many threats, overt and veiled. But all real. Johnson was a killer and a sociopath, possibly the only president to be a true sociopath. He and lady bird were vile people. Coke Stevenson was afraid of Johnson as well.

My mother and grandmother went into hiding out of state during the days after Box 13 things were that tense, at my grandfathers existence. But my grandmother had always felt fairly safe as her mother and the Parr's mother had been close and she had grown up around the Parr's. George Parr was in major debt to Johnson because Johnson had beguiled and manipulated Harry Truman to pardon Parr on a felony conviction, restoring his rights. In doing so the Parr machine became the most vile and powerful in South Texas, even running over the Klebergs and having dominant influence in the Valley along with strong connections into Mexico.

They were a South Texas cartel long before any other and beholden to Johnson lock, stock, and barrel. As mentioned Johnson was tight with lots of outright criminals and thug, yet he ascended to the pinnacle of US government.

Back in the 70's when I worked for SWBell, one of older engineers told me a story about the Johnsons and their ranch in Stonewall. In order to have adequate communications at the ranch, SWBell was required to build a dedicated telecommunications trunk cable from Austin all the way to the ranch (approx 70 miles), at considerable expense. This was instead of the local telco company providing this service to the ranch. Trunk cables are typically built only between central offices or between cities (toll cables). This guy always hated when LBJ came to the ranch, because he and others were on "alert" in case special circuits were required to coordinated, tested, and installed. It was always last minute and pressure filled times.

He also said there was a microwave tower near their ranch, but not on it. One day ladybird was driving on their ranch and noticed the tower in the distance. She didn't like the tower where it was and told LBJ she wanted it moved out of sight. It was relocated, again at considerable expense.

LBJ doesnt hold a candle to FDR or Woodrow Wilson in terms of power hungry. Corrupt? Absolutely - he carried Texas under very sketchy conditions with dead voters, etc.

Wilson was truly one of the most evil SOB's that ever sat in the WH. FDRwas far and away the most power hungry and thought himself a king almost.

The golf pro , John Kinser, was LBJs sisters (Josefa Johnson) long time boyfriend.

Mac Wallace was found guilty of Kinsers murder. The jury was deadlocked between the death penalty and life in prison. Desipite an eye witness teatimoy, the judge overruled and sentenced Wallace to 5 years and immediately suspended his sentence, setting him free.

It is rumored LBJ paid for Wallace's defense. Wallace resigned from his political appointment prior to the trial to distance himself from LBJ.

Wallace himself died in a mysterious one car accident in Pittsburg Tx. Josefa Johnson also died mysteriously. There is a lot of conjecture foul play was at hand but no autopsy was performed. Her drinking and affairs were a long time embarrassment and liability to LBJ.

LBJ is really when the Democratic Party "flipped." When the democratic leadership realized they could exploit blacks on a national stage and be celebrated for it. They then promised a bunch of free entitlements in exchange for robbing their actual wealth and resegregating them in urban centers.

Incorrect, Texas was never a liberal state. The "solid south" was full of conservative southern democrats were nothing like the modern democrat party, that's why you saw a huge number of conservative democrats leave the party in the 70's and 80's as the leadership of the party moved further and further left.

As for LBJ, he was a corrupt and racist old SOB who cared about nothing more than enriching himself, and he did more to hurt the poor in the long run than any other president in the last 100 years or more.

There was an article linked on this site a couple years back about LBJ. As I recall it was an older article when it was shared. It went into depth however, highlighting his personality; crooked to the core, disgustingly misogynistic, and a devout racist. A truly disgusting example of human existence.

His quote about who will be voting Democrat for 200 years circa Civil Rights Act legislation says it all.

LBJ clearly looked at people like the cattle that roamed rural Texas country side.

Quote:

Johnson doesn't seem to have been very shy about his bodily functions. He would frequently demand that his people follow him into the bathroom and continue speaking to him as he used the toilet with the door open. Once, while he was speaking to his National Security Advisor, McGeorge Bundy in the bathroom, Bundy turned away to face the wall. Johnson yelled at him to come closer so he could continue speaking to him. Bundy walked towards the President while still facing the wall as Johnson called him closer, causing Bundy to almost accidentally fall into his lap.
Johnson also didn't really care where he used the bathroom. When Johnson was at home on his ranch, he would often cruise around in his car while drinking beer, which obviously upset the Secret Service. When the President stopped to relieve himself on the side of the road, the Secret Service agents guarding him would rush to catch up. Once, while Johnson was in the middle of the process, a gust of wind caught the stream, blowing it onto a nearby Secret Service agent's leg. When the agent told the president that he was urinating on his leg, Johnson replied, "I know, that's my prerogative."
Johnson seems to have turned this kind of behavior into an important part of the Johnson treatment. It was a way to establish a kind of macho dominance over the people he was speaking to. And, more importantly, it let him show off his *****. While standing at the urinal, he would sometimes swing around to continue the conversation he was having, his genitals hanging free. Once he even pointed it out to a lawmaker standing next to him and asked, "You ever seen anything this big?" Johnson then continued speaking about some upcoming legislation as he swung his ***** around in his hand.

This article just keeps going. Highlighting the maturity of a 16yr old

I heard a story (maybe someone can confirm) that at Southwest Texas State, LBJ's nickname was Bull***** And by nickname, I mean, that was the only name people knew him by. So much so, that when he decided to run for Vice President, they tried to interview his old classmates, and they had no idea who the reporters were asking about. The reporters were like, "I don't understand, he was the class president, how do you not remember him?" And then the interviewee's would say, "Oh do you mean Bull**** Johnson?"
