How do you lose population when you have a beautiful place to live, popular tourist destinations, abundant sunshine and energy resources and a bombing agriculture sector?
BTW, if it had not been for "international migration", they would have lost even more people.

Not a lot of good jobs out there compared with West Coast, East Coast, and Texas.

New Mexico is a leftist **** hole, created by the politics of Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

All according to plan. As long as there are enough yardmen and maids for the ruling class.

Didn't Oregon and Washington hope for the same thing once upon a time?

Vermont, but its kind of an enigma. Far, far left on every radical woke issue, but much less so on fiscal issues (still left, just not nearly as much) and left of center on guns, but would look like Texas or Florida when compared to the big anti-gun states like CA or NY.

Beautiful compared to what, everything west of San Antonio? Outside of the oilfield, and whatever tourism they can fetch in Ruidoso and Santa Fe, what else does that place have to offer? It'll be on a decline from here on out unless something drastically happens.

isn't WA increasing? Either way, the vast majority of the blues are losing people.

They voted for people who supported cutting off O&G which funded about 30% of their Education budget.

Similar to how Texas has the PUF, so does New Mexico.

Anyone with a brain would see that the problems coming.

No idea, but if it is, I'd guess it would be due to people from eastern Oregon (very conservative) moving to eastern WA which is also pretty conservative. I'd be shocked if Seattle is gaining population, or if it is, it is the suburbs far enough away to avoid the crap hole Seattle has become.

I've been to New Mexico, and it's a sh*+hole.

I'd rather live in Louisiana any day of the week, and twice on Sundays.

As someone who just came back from skiing the resorts and high forests are beautiful. The rest of it was depressing, poor, and seemingly devoid of people, life, and opportunity.

I have a good friend I met at A&M. He lives in Albuquerque and worked at the Sandia labs.

He would tell you that there are not a lot of good jobs and there are a lack of amenities that keep young people there. Thus, a ton of the college educated kids leave for elsewhere. Both his boys work in other states.

In turn, this creates other problems. For instance, healthcare is fairly poor. If someone is referred to a specialist, because there are relative few physicians, it might be months before one can be seen.

So………. People leave.

You'd be surprised.

AWS can't hire people fast enough and they are moving tons of people from California. Lots of Liberal Arts majors are getting jobs in Tech in the Seattle area.

Amazon and Microsoft are two HUGE employers and they can't get buildings fast enough to accommodate their needs.

It is true Spokane is also booming... I'd think more from Idaho than Oregon, though.

Colorado is a blue state that is booming.

I lived in NM for 9 years and won't return because of the idiots currently running the state. However, NM itself is a fantastic state in which to live. For those who say that there's not much to do, you must not like the outdoors. Also, it used to be a great place for entrepreneurs because of the lack of competition. There were lots of very wealthy, self-made people in NM when I lived there.

Seattle increased ~20k per their last estimate in April: https://ofm.wa.gov/sites/default/files/public/dataresearch/pop/april1/ofm_april1_population_final.pdf

New Mexico appears to be "all in" for abortion, no restrictions and working to be an abortion destination.

Late-Term abortionists are relocating from pro-life states to New Mexico.

When you kill your offspring, your population will decline.

Drove from Santa Fe to Bandelier National Monument then through Los Alamos (looked like a nice town) then a beautiful drive through Valles Caldera National Preserve, through the Jemez Valley. Just beautiful scenery!

The rest of the drive south and east and then north back up to SF was less remarkable except the depressing conditions at San Ysidro and the Zia Pueblos. Very similar to the AZ Reservations north of I-40.

That said this article by HVS at The Heritage Foundation is disconcerting:

I wouldn't say it's booming. The huge gains it made in 2010s have slowed down tremendously

Is it even a top 10 state anymore in terms of growth?
Jabin
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I really don't know but was assuming that it was continuing to grow. But you know what happens when you assume anything.

You are correct. Although Colorado continues to grow, it's growth rate has slowed to a crawl.

Declining population (driven by migration) doesn't seem to be a problem for New Mexico's neighbors, especially overwhelmingly Republican Utah:

That is good news to me. I have lived here for about 40 years. Everything negative that has been said is true. The Legislature even redrew the Congressional Districts so District 2 (Joe Skeen's Class of 50 old District) which used to be solidly Republican is now a toss up. So please do not move here. However, you can still come visit and spend lots of money.

In addition to all of the above, NM has a water issue

There have been recent times that one could ride a bicycle down the "Rio Grande" south of Caballo

I wish Texas could annex Cruces to Alamogordo to Ruidoso to Raton. Leave out Taos Albuquerque and Santa Fe
