…you realize those stadiums were built with slave labor, right?

I get the alcohol thing is a big part of trying to enjoy such a boring game, but as far as moral outrage goes, this isn't exactly Dubai's issue #1.
Hence why I called them crooked ass ****ers in my OP. Also, Dubai is in the UAE. Not Qatar. You're thinking Doha probably.
Nah - I just mixed up which UAE country is hosting an event I'm not going to watch.

It's kinda like the difference between Whales and Scotland. I know they're different - but unless youre in international business / trade in those places it's not a functionally relevant distinction.

So these dedicated alcohol friendly fan zones -- they are just going to turn into hooligan brawl sites, right?

So was hosting it in the summer, so really, nothing surprises me. The entire bid was a lie that was entertained due to bribes.

I think this was always the plan by both sides.

I've always thought it would be fun to go to the World Cup. I have since come to realize that you don't want to go to one outside of a First World country.

Yes, this was the initial plan from the get go. Budweiser bribed their way into the stadium, but wouldn't put up the extra money to grease the wheel here at the end.

There are still fan zones set up in Doha that will have alcohol, same as the hotels.

I lived in Doha up until March of this year.
Paying to be the exclusive anything at an event is not in my mind a bribe. Did Slovacek's bribe A&M to be the exclusive sausage of Kyle Field?

and if you haven't watched it - the FIFA documentary on Netflix right now is good. I've only gotten through two of the episodes but both Russia and Qatar bribed key members of the Executive Committee of FIFA to get these events.

It took a bribe to even start the conversation of having beer in the stadiums.

Like I said, beer will still be available at the fan zones. The Lusail fan zone is quite large, but will be a disaster.

Doha is not ready to support the fans, as the Corniche is completely shut down. Most people seem to be commuting from Dubai rather than staying in Doha. Various West Bay hotels were not able to be completed in time.

I know Doha well, **** place to live.

Al Jazeera is getting to cover the show on its own stomping grounds, although it has to tread carefully.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/11/18/world-cup-organisers-say-beer-not-sold-stadium-sites-qatar

Quote:

Football World Cup organisers have announced that alcoholic drinks will not be offered for sale at stadium sites in Qatar, just two days before the event starts.

The decision on Friday was a reversal of the original plan for major tournament sponsor Budweiser to sell beer around the eight sites, within the ticketing perimeter, for three hours before and one hour after each game.
. . .
But Abdullah, a resident of Qatar from Egypt, said he was "happy" to hear the news.

"It's not like alcohol is not sold in Qatar," he told Al Jazeera. "People have to respect Muslim culture and get on with the tournament. I'll feel much better about taking my family to the stadium now," said Abdullah, who is supporting Brazil in the tournament.
. . .
"As partners of FIFA for over three decades, we look forward to our activations of FIFA World Cup campaigns around the world to celebrate football with our consumers," said an AB InBev spokesperson. "Some of the planned stadium activations cannot move forward due to circumstances beyond our control."

Reports said the company, one of the world's largest brewers, has already shipped the majority of its stock from Britain to Qatar in expectation of selling its product to fans.

"Tournament organisers appreciate AB InBev's understanding and continuous support to our joint commitment to cater for everyone during the FIFA World Cup," the statement said.
. . .
Some restrictions on alcohol sales in stadiums are not unusual. In the English Premier League, for example, beer can be sold in football grounds, but must be consumed in specific areas and not taken within view of the pitch. In Brazil, beer sales were banned in stadiums in 2003, though the law was changed when the country hosted the World Cup in 2014. France's Ligue 1 also does not allow alcohol inside stadiums.

UAE and Bahrain just made with peace with Israel 2 years ago and are allies with the USA

so World Cup chooses Iranian ally Qatar to host the games.

makes sense!!

we all know the decision makers were paid off like always in the corrupt world of international sports

I find myself not caring.

Qatar can do the Qatar things Qatar wants to do.

And my interest in the World Cup is ZERO --- except to see the woke US team get absolutely throttled.

Euros and Latin Americans btfo. For that reason alone I am laughing at this. I also laugh at a globohomo company like Budweiser paying $75 million but not wanting to bribe anyone and then them just straight stealing the money.

It's funny as hell from all angles.

these qatari jackasses practically imported foreign slave labor to build the stadiums and the headline today is about beer sales going sideways? This has been a disaster since award in 2010.

This is going to be a glorious ****fest for the next month and I'm all in favor so long as FIFA gets the finger and reforms.

FIFA is the soccer WEF. Corrupt globalist trash enriching themselves off the backs of normal folk.

Prove me wrong.

There's no "practically" about it, I saw it in person a few years back. Plane after plane full of working age dudes all wearing the same hat and t shirt, clutching their papers. Disembark and head to a loading zone, van picks up and whisks them away like cannon fodder. So many lost lives and safety incidents just to build up for this, it's insane.

Qatar should absolutely be able to run their show the way they want to, but didn't do so in good faith from the jump.

At least there are signs of players trying to just focus on the games, like French captain Hugo Lloris.

It's an absolutely ****show in Qatar, but even though the WC gets a bad rap on this board, I'm actually pumped about the Mexico/USA/Canada WC in 26, as should be using mostly existing infrastructure and the groups are spread out enough that cities aren't totally overrun.

This is where I point out the awkwardness of Texas A&M having an official campus in Qatar. So i guess we are either an enlightened school regarding Islam or we are indirect supporters of one of our biggest enemies in the world.

Why not both?

I saw that they are going to allow same-sex partners to hold hands during the games but will banned again immediately afterwards. Something tells me that isn't going to play out the way they say it will.

Soccer fans like myself have to realize this is such an easy win for critics of soccer. It does make the sport look bad.

It's a very popular sport both in the US and worldwide though so saying, "lol nobody watches it who cares" just makes you look ignorant and dumb.

NFL is playing games in Europe and sold out their game in Munich recently so understand that cultural exchanges are great.

I can laugh along with you though about libs not realizing this about middle eastern countries and the hypocrisy around "tolerance." USA is obvious much more tolerant and "progressive" than these countries and whining about christianity in the US is ridiculous.
