The interesting part for me is the connection between the accused and the victims. Even if it was just randomness, what put them in the path of their fate?
I've also heard that that house was creaky. Did he get there early and wait? Did he get there and enter after they got back? Were the two downstairs just lucky and he didn't know they were home?
While I think I could kill someone without much, if any, remorse if I felt them a threat to me or my family, I cannot wrap my head around people killing total strangers or even someone they knew but that had done them no harm. And while shooting at a crowd of people is one thing, to get up close and personal to stab to death 4 people makes me shake my head.
If the guy had gotten in a fight with someone and later killed him, that would still be wrong, but there is some basis for the confrontation, some connection with between the killer and the victim. Attacking and killing four people as they sleep is beyond my capacity to grasp.
