It's not luck, they have asked from the beginning for people with video to turn it over. You do realize that they don't have the right to just go confiscate privately owned video footage, don't you? They need cooperation of the business owners to get it.
Yes, they do. The DA gets a search warrant. A crime has been committed, surveillance video may contain evidence related to that crime.

I'm no expert, but I don't know that they could just get a blanket search warrant for every camera in the city. And a search warrant still requires process. Maybe I'm wrong. Regardless, cops have never shied away from saying they need to help and support of the local community, that is not them with their "thumb up their ass."

Did I say "every camera in the city"? No I did not.

But being a small town, Moscow has a few main roads and where the crime scene was located there were only limited access by road. Red light and other cameras along such limited routes at a limited time is narrow enough.

It is not a "blanket search warrant."

Have they said how far away the gas station is from the crime scene?

That explains the interest. Thanks.

I've been following this case for a while now. That there are roughly 50 FBI agents on the case for the past month, and given that they previously identified the area of interest concerning the vehicle (known routes to and from crime scene), and didn't go get this video proactively tells me that they (FBI) collectively are little more than low skilled government workers. They should have blanketed the area of ingress/egress for video footage rather than waiting on a gas station clerk to do it for them. And they wouldn't necessarily need a warrant to obtain it as the community appears eager to aid the investigation. Whether incompetence or sheer laziness on their part, my confidence level of an arrest thusly has fallen substantially to near zero. What the heck are the agents doing all day?

Yeah, it's like they don't watch the show "See No Evil" on the ID Channel. That is the first thing LE does!

It would appear that way but I'm willing to bet they know more about the car than they say publicly. For example, where did they get the information that they were looking for a 2011-2012 Elantra? As far as I know they haven't said how they got that information. Perhaps they have detailed video that shows the license plate and already have identified the owner and are searching for them. They released to the public the car information to build more evidence against the killer/killers. That's my hope at least.

To be fair to LE, we don't know a lot of the behind the scenes and are merely making assumptions about things that we see in the media. To flat out say that they didn't ask for this is a bit of a stretch to say with 100% certainty.

Changing gears (no pun intended), I'm curious what originally led LE to hone in on the White Elantra/car. Obviously it wasn't this gas station video, and perhaps it has already been discussed but I cannot seem to find it myself.

With the registration database that I'm sure they have readily available, would it not be possible for them to narrow down a list of white elantras to a fairly manageable list and start interviewing those registered owners? Another thought I had regarding the video of the vehicle, is it safe to assume that LE has traced the route that this vehicle was on/spotted on the gas station video to ascertain additional footage and/or info from other area businesses or customers?

Thank you. They have plenty of resources and a supportive public. You could be at every gas station or store within several miles asking for tape within a couple days at most, or just call them and ask to send it in. Its not that hard when people want to help. Why you wouldn't do that in the first few days at most is beyond me. Thats laziness or incompetence until proven otherwise. A freaking gas station clerk had to call the tip line.

Castle would have cone up with idea of obtaining the local business vids in the first 10 min of the show... because they always are caught on surveillance vids.

I believe a neighbor's camera caught the car in the area around the time of the murders, but they were unable to get the license plate. I imagine this could be because the camera only caught the front of the car, and perhaps there isn't a license plate on the front of the car? Or maybe it only got a side profile.

The house next door had one of those security cams that screw into an exterior light socket. Early news photos/video showed the PD talking to the neighbor and taking the cam as evidence

The "I'm not Darryl" (grounz) case showed me what a network of private cameras can show. They had him kicking off his shoes and hiding in a jungle gym.

Excellent point. It was minute by minute of his movements after he plowed through the parade. Also had his movements before he turned into the parade, when he was in a confrontation with his ex, Erica.

SIAP and I missed it but have the blood DNA results come back yet? Obviously killing four people with a huge knife in a frenzy would make the likelihood the killer left his own blood on the scene possible.

Also any info come out on the glove found outside the house? Have the police stated if they believe it belonged to the killer or one of the housemates?

Edit, never mind I see now that the glove was found weeks after the murder and cops didn't see it in earlier searches. It was found by a retired cop that went by the house weeks after the crime. I can't believe the cops would be so incompetent to miss a glove outside the home with the number of officers, forensic techs, etc that were there in the days after the murder. One of them could have dropped their glove by mistake or someone else dropped it there to muddle with the case, maybe even the retired cop that claims to have found it.

Cut the FBI agents some slack. They were probably spending every night scrolling twitter for right leaning accounts to get banned, can't expect them to focus on this crime.

Gotten a little frosty, the case, but it's kind of promising that they at least have a lead on the car.

It's going to take some time for them to sort through a list of all registered 2013-2017 White Hyundai Elantra owners in Idaho/Washington state/ radiating outward) until they find the person they are looking for.

Unless this is just a tertiary person they want to talk to regarding the events that night, they should be able to find whoever did this if that car is the suspect.

The car is likely either in the bottom of a lake now or sold for $1 on craigslist and headed down to Mexico. Hoping they got a good shot of the license plate. This could take 8-12 months, though, IMO, unless the already significant resources already allocated are in for the long haul.

Also: Here's a re-creation of the interior of the murder scene, potentially with possible points of entry.

Excellent points. These things take time.

Also, when you have such a mystery, you have to consider some outliers. Take it that they have fully ruled out - perhaps on forensic grounds - one of the victims was also the culprit? If you take the angle.

I watch stuff like this all the time, so basically stayed at a Holiday Inn and dont know ****, but this seems like one of the cases where the buzz dies down for several months and then they pull a rabbit out of the hat. At least I hope so. I dont think this one will stay cold for very long. However, I thought the same thing about the Delphi Murders and that took them 6 years.

Yeah. I only retain 10 days of video on my security cameras and I know others who retain 3 to 5 days of it.

Now there is additional security cam footage of Kaylee and Maddie before reaching the food truck. The audio has Kaylee asking Maddie: "Maddie, what did you just say to Adam?"
Maddie replies: "I told Adam everything"

Probably has very little to do with the murders, but it may give some context to the later attempted phone calls to Kaylee's ex-boyfriend if they wanted to reach him before Adam could talk to him about it.

At least the internet sleuths have a new character to research

Just a hunch but strongly suspect a dysfunctional relationship or a stalker of campus is involved here, and not some outside stranger passing through. Already detecting some sideways currents about the `cast'.

This was released because it shows that "hoodie guy" was with the girls all evening, not some random stalker in the background. Mr. Goncalves has said that "Adam" is not a suspect.
