FBI directed Indiana stop to see photos of his hands. Sounds like the case was initially built around genealogical DNA (I'm assuming they've tested his DNA by now)

The fact that is interesting to me is that if you get pulled over for a **** reason like following to close after you have committed a crime, you better know the government is onto you.

Fox reported over 19,000 followed the flight.

This trial will rival OJ trial in public interest. A soulless Jack the Ripper type butchering young folks in their bed as they slept. Not a crime of passion but a brutal cold blooded massacre by a soulless jerk.

Animal will have his day in court but much like all cowardly killers, a cold slab and poison needle destiny awaits him.

not even close to oj. My school literally had the trial playing for kids to watch at the end.

Yeah, most people don't even know about this case if you ask around. Will not even remotely approach the OJ trial.

19,000 watching a fight tracker is not comparable to the 95 million people who watched OJ's bronco chase. Plus OJ was a long standing sports-hero celebrity, and interest was further centered around race as the trial played out. This is interesting but isn't close.

I was backpacking thru Europe at the time and it was being shown on TV there.

This is tragic, but media wise it is a nothing burger.

Internet is available world wide now, larger audience has access to this trial is my thought process. Much larger.

We didn't have internet during OJ, outside of Compuserve or AOL

If "Slow news day" type events going on, this could be a trial of major interest world wide.

Texags thread will be a good sample of the interest this trial generates across the country, we are a good barometer or pulse of the country.

No one is saying there isn't interest. Horrifically murdered (white) college students will generate interest.

But, I think you significantly underestimate the way the OJ trial transfixed the nation and abroad.

An estimated 57% of the USA watched the OJ verdict. Read this report detailing the way the world "stopped" for the verdict. Internet or not, that just isn't going to happen here, particularly 1+ years from now.

Wherever you read this stop reading that source.

Portland is in Oregon.

Moscow is in Idaho.

This is a state matter and not federal.

Yeah they stopped class in HS and rolled in a TV to watch the verdict. Need to find the daily ratings for CourtTV because they are probably still the highest that channel ever had (it has been renamed many times since then)

I was wondering about this. Since he would have crossed state lines from WA to ID to commit the crimes, would it not fall into federal jurisdiction?

Obviously, IANAL...

Same. Had news crews at our school and the school down the road to show the different reactions.

The interrupted the NBA finals w the chase. That was unprecedented.

Pretty sure 50 million of those viewers wanted to see if OJ would off himself on TV. No one really cared about the details of the double murder or trial drama at that point.

definitely remember this very clearly as I was a camp counselor in Pittsburgh and we were all together at a house party that summer and they broke in with the car chase

is Al Cowlings still alive?

this was almost thirty years ago!!

What bothers me is a person can become a suspect without traditional assumptions of probable cause, all because some distant relative they may not even know submitted their DNA to 23andMe. I find the whole concept very creepy and invasive.
Agree. Very uneasy about how this is being used.

For people of European descent, 100% of people may now be identified through DNA tests because the databases are now large enough that it does not matter if you have submitted information or not. Leaving DNA at a crime site essentially means giving yourself up if you are white.

Other races are far more incomplete and the old methods must be used.

Another step towards all the things in Minority Report (though cannot remember if DNA databases were part of the omnipresent nanny state in the movie, but it fits).

Cars that disable themselves if a perp is inside, cameras and biometric scanners everywhere, etc.

I am of the "you don't have anything to worry about if you do not commit a crime", but at some point the DNA is so good you could donate a sweater to goodwill that a perp wears committing a crime and your DNA is flagged.

That doesn't seem to fit in with our system of justice and there needs to be some severe rethinking on ancestral DNA analysis.

I've never been arrested or committed a crime so I don't know. But if I had been arrested for a quadruple murder and I was truly innocent, I would be screaming at the top of my lungs and professing my innocence to anyone that would listen. I would enlist help from my parents to hire the best attorney available. I would not be sitting in jail mute just waiting for the next step.
Granted, we have not been given any information about the guy other than for them to say he's been quiet since his arrest. That wouldn't be me if I was arrested for something I didn't do.
Does anyone else think it's odd that all we've heard is from the public defender is that he looks forward to getting back to Idaho to be exonerated? Something just seems off with this. Seems like the authorities have got the right person in custody.

Wait until insurance companies figure out how to associate DNA with certain coverages. It's exactly why I haven't done any of the ancestry crap and highly discourage it with my own family.

After all the fraud and money grabbing that has happened with COVID, you are a fool to think this will not happen.

I no longer trust anything associated with big healthcare and our govt.

You can't avoid it, your DNA is already there and they will know what you have and don't have. There is enough information already in the system to basically recreate your DNA through the use of AI.

It's coming and there is little if any you can do to stop it. To keep from derailing the thread, we may want to make a new thread to discuss the implications of DNA identification and issues with it.

We have never done genetic testing, but I did send a cheek swab in to BeTheMatch when my friend was dying of leukemia and needed a bone marrow transplant.

Anyway, my mom has 6 brothers and sisters and my husband has about 50 cousins so either way I will not be murdering anyone soon since there is surely multiple uploaders in our network we dont even know about.

Seems like Boise would be the only likely venue if it moves.

Lawyers tell me if this is dumb…if I am the defense, I may want to keep it in Moscow to preserve that appeal based on tainted jury in the future. Bad idea?

Idk his confidence in that he will be exonerated is throwing me off, I'm actually starting to doubt if this is our guy. Innocent until proven guilty and the lawyers have to prove it beyond a reasonable doubt. Cops better have significant evidence

Read the book Whoever Fights Monsters. Often people like this think they can beat the wrap. They are smarter than everyone else and often so narcissistic that nobody will get them even when they are caught. Even after conviction they try to play mind games. Fascinating book and will give you some insight into the mind of evil people

What confidence? He hasn't made any statements.

The only one saying anything was his Public Defender in PA, who was responsible only for the extradition hearing. The PD even said he never specifically spoke about the case with BK.

He's facing quadruple murder charges. Those aren't going away. Fighting extradition would have made zero sense.

Seems awfully cavalier for someone who killed 4 people, calm and collected. But as mentioned in the other post he's a narcissist who thinks he'll get away with it
