Unless I'm mistaken this seems like a pretty big development. More wars unapproved by congress!

Let me guess, in a "teaching" capacity? Freaking stupid. We are an errant (or deliberate) missile away from having a possible act of war on US troops.

Edit: even worse - inspecting weapons. Do this in America and then let them deal with them on the other end.

He's referring to the reestablishment of the defense attache and defense cooperation offices at the US embassy in Kiev. It's a handful of servicemen. They were sent home when the war started and just now returned.

"U.S. personnel have recently resumed on-site inspections to assess weapon stocks in country whenever and wherever the security conditions allow." The official said, "the return of our defense attache and Office of Defense Cooperation personnel in country has allowed us to resume this critical function."

The defense official's comments come after the U.S. State Department announced a plan to prevent U.S. and western-provided weaponry from ending up on the black market or be captured by pro-Russian forces who could use them to "develop countermeasures, propaganda, or to conduct false-flag operations."

They're making sure the billions in weapons we are giving them are actually getting there. It's not like we are sending in divisions.

Horrific if true.

We do NOT need to be involved.

Let the two tyrants slug it out. Not our problem.

Yes of course. And what happens if that attach gets killed?

So you either didn't read the article or any source material, or made a bogus claim to make people think it was combat troops.

Where is my bogus claim?

This is the first redeployment of US military in Ukraine apart from the embassy

Again, it's being done by the handful of servicemen assigned to every US embassy in a foreign country. These are not combat troops and are the only ones in-country.

Not apart from the embassy: "The return of our defense attache and Office of Defense Cooperation personnel in country has allowed us to resume this critical function."

Ok so it's apart of the embassy. But it's operating outside of it if it's verifying weapons etc. and my original claim is as Us forces in Ukraine. Which is accurate. Which to me is a big deal but also said I could wrong on that.

To be clear, it is a part of the embassy, not apart from it.

The job the handful of servicemen are doing is the same job (Attache and Defense Cooperation) they did at the embassy before the war started. There are guys doing the same thing at almost every US embassy in the world. It's only recently that our Kiev embassy has been fully restaffed, including the military guys in those two embassy offices doing the weapons inspections and inventories.

It's routine and a return to normal embassy ops.

They're almost like embassy personnel but with a focus on military relations and cooperation.

They are embassy personnel, to include having diplomatic immunity.

Do you not thibk they will be operating apart from the physical embassy? They can be apart of whatever you want but they are likely operating in Ukraine in conjunction with the Ukraine military. Which to me is a big deal, I could be wrong on that.

Here's a quote.

U.S. personnel have recently resumed on-site inspections to assess weapon stocks in country whenever and wherever the security conditions allow.

So it's not people just holed up in the embassy anymore.

I doubt the Ruskies view it that way. They view it as this is our proxy war with them.

Of course they do business outside of the embassy. Almost no embassy officer--military or civilian--could do their jobs if they holed up. All attache and defense cooperation servicemen spend considerable time working outside of the embassy. Again, it's a return to routine business and much the same is being done by most every US embassy around the world.

Frankly you dismiss it. It comes with the risk and the territory. If worried about, don't have any there.

There have been reports since before the war that the CIA was on the ground and there is no reason why they wouldn't still be there for training and logistics. Since 2014 the USA special operations has done training with Ukraine SOF. I would not doubt if we do have some small teams of green berets since training other country's forces is what they do best. You wouldn't be able to tell they are there since they would be dressed the same as the Ukraine forces.

Id typically aggree. I worry about the media over hyping it and Americans just consuming whatever the flashing tv says and we find ourselves in another war.
It's what we do.

That's how Viet Nam started. Us helping the French there, then eventually replacing them.

I don't have an issue with maintaining accountability and wanting to keep weapons from entering the black market.

If our stingers hit the black market, for example, we could see terrorists taking down airliners for the next 20 years.

In the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan we required the Afghan rebels to bring back parts of the stingers or downed aircraft to prove they were using the missiles before sending them a new batch.

So let us know when we send advisors into Ukraine. This isn't it.

It's okay. They're most likely just there as military advisors. It's all good, just like in Vietnam.
