Basically, Russian troops stole $5m in farm equipment from a Deere dealer in Ukraine and shipped it home. Deere remotely disabled the software that runs the machines, turning them into big paperweights.

On one hand, yea, stick it to the Russians. On the other hand, sort of terrifying.

What happens when Biden decides farmers are the enemy, like the Dutch, or Canadian truckers? "Hey John Deere, shut down the farmers, unless you want to lose export licenses, and have OSHA, EPA, NLRB, etc etc up your butts for the next decade. "

There's an exploit now for Deere.

Screw the Russians but Deere is pretty terrible too with their service policies

Hate to tell it to you but this can already be done on most modern vehicles, construction, mining, ag equipment. Next year most of the oilfield equipment my company puts out will have the same ability. Part of it is for applications like this, if the equipment goes out of its geographical area then it needs to be shut off (like if it gets stolen).

Was not the intention to be able to shut off for most applications but it can be done. We can connect to the equipment by satellite, cell, or a few other technologies.

Same with cars and trucks too then, right? I find this very concerning.

Maybe there would be a backstop here with the courts versus this being a foreign country?

Yeah backstops like a judge's stopping a warrant to search the former president's residence for documents that incriminate the DoJ.

Now do all the Russian leased planes.

How many of the tractors actually shut down versus just producing the annoying "beep" alarm of a computer error not operating properly?

This feature is a good theft deterrent, though obviously has some potential for abuse or forcing a subscriber plan.

Yeah. I hate the fact that companies are using technology to keep their hands on products that consumers "buy." I get the benefits (mostly for the company, but also the consumer may greatly benefit from a new software push, too)... but I wish that consumers had the option to buy without the strings, and that buying WITH strings would be classified differently with associated responsibilities: "If you're locking me out from operating on my own tractor, than YOU need to extend complimentary mechanical services."

Same idea, in a weird way, of a gun-free designation: if you're making me dependent, then you should become responsible for what happens in that domain.

As part of the Infrastructure Bill, Congress wrote into law mandatory breathalyzers for everyone and passive AI face scanning on all new cars. As in every time you drive you will have to blow into your breathalyzer that comes with your car. They gave themselves about 5-7 years to implement from signing so they can figure it out and wear us down incrementally over that time.

I highly doubt the bold will happen.

1984 is here. Now.

The 80's and 90's was our high water mark. Almost everything was downhill from there. We are going to HATE the future. We didn't have all of these fancy gadgets to constantly distract us but I'd like to hear one person argue with a straight face that it wasn't way better back then. Quality of life, music, movies/entertainment, sports, human interaction, kids rode bikes and explored outside all day and just had to be back by dinner, we didn't constantly get everyone's "hot takes" and hear about everything bad that happens every f-ing day.

We just kept one of them (they got 99 of the 100 ordered) and a bunch of spare parts. They also got shorted on their order of sidewinders, sparrow's or phoenix missiles.

They care way more about the ability to control us. Wouldn't be surprised if there is no way to disable them remotely.

"Wheel angle sensor mismatch..." you haven't lived until you get that one and they can fix the situation.

Some Canadian contractors also messed with the electronics before fleeing the county, disabling the radar.

Many companies are looking into the cybersecurity of their mobile assets. Caterpillar yellow iron equipment and John Deere tractors for example have wifi, cellular, or satellite connectivity that can be hacked. From there, hackers can disable assets or sometimes even control the assets. If wifi, hackers may be able to penetrate the corporate networks and do all sorts of other damage.

I would bet that there's a pretty simple way to remove or disable the antenna that receives the disconnect signal in most cases. Sophisticated ones probably have some anti-tamper technology but there are ways to defeat it that doesn't require 100s of square feet of aluminum foil.

the F-14s were sold to the Persians in the 1970s

you think the US put kill switches into a fighter plane in 1975?

we just have been embargoing them and not allowing the Iranians to get spare parts

what i was thinking about was the engineers helping at the time tried to disable the phoenix missiles and was short term successful, but then enough engineers didn't defect they where able to restore them and use them again Iraq

The original thought is we want to be able to pull data from the machines to make them better. Kind of like Google, be able to look at your search history and such to give you a personalized experience. From that the companies figured out that that information is huge business, maybe not for you but for someone willing to pay for it. Almost everything is moving to IoT, the only thing holding it back are the programmers and people to figure out the portal infrastructure for each application. The automotive industries have invested billions to do this, not every industry has those resources.

I can count on one hand the companies that have successful electric oilfield equipment that do not have to keep being pulled off of jobs since they keep going down. One of the reasons why the telematics/IoT will be so huge in the next few years. For a lot of the oilfield equipment if a unit goes down it cost over $100k an hour, if you can be sitting at your corporate office and get notified that a piece of equipment has something wrong so you can get a replacement on-site before it does you just saved a ton of cash
